(1 Samuel 31:1-6;1 Chronicles 10:1-6) 1Now it came to pass afterthe deathof Saul, when Davidwas returnedfrom the slaughterof the Amalekites, and Davidhad abodetwodaysin Ziklag;2It came even to pass on the thirdday, that, behold, a mancameout of the campfrom Saulwith his clothesrent, and earthupon his head:and [so] it was, when he cameto David, that he fellto the earth, and did obeisance.3And Davidsaidunto him, From whence comestthou? And he saidunto him, Out of the campof Israelam I escaped.4And Davidsaidunto him, Howwent the matter?I pray thee, tellme. And he answered,That the peopleare fledfrom the battle, and manyof the peoplealso are fallenand dead;and Sauland Jonathanhis sonare deadalso.5And Davidsaidunto the young manthat toldhim, How knowestthou that Sauland Jonathanhis sonbe dead?6And the young manthat toldhim said,As I happenedby chanceupon mountGilboa, behold, Saulleanedupon his spear;and, lo, the chariotsand horsemenfollowed hardafter him.7And when he lookedbehindhim, he sawme, and calledunto me. And I answered,Here [am] I.8And he saidunto me, Who [art] thou? And I answeredhim, I [am] an Amalekite.9He saidunto me again, Stand,I pray thee, upon me, and slayme: for anguishis comeupon me, because my life[is] yet whole in me.10So I stoodupon him, and slewhim, because I was surethat he could not liveafterthat he was fallen:and I tookthe crownthat [was] upon his head, and the braceletthat [was] on his arm,and have broughtthem hither unto my lord. 11Then Davidtook holdon his clothes, and rentthem; and likewise all the menthat [were] with him:12And they mourned, and wept, and fasteduntil even, for Saul, and for Jonathanhis son,and for the peopleof the LORD,and for the houseof Israel;because they were fallenby the sword.13And Davidsaidunto the young manthat toldhim, Whence [art] thou? And he answered,I [am] the sonof a stranger,an Amalekite.14And Davidsaidunto him, How wast thou not afraidto stretch forththine handto destroythe LORD'Sanointed?15And Davidcalledoneof the young men,and said,Go near,[and] fallupon him. And he smotehim that he died.16And Davidsaidunto him, Thy blood[be] upon thy head;for thy mouthhath testifiedagainst thee, saying,I have slainthe LORD'Sanointed. David's Song for Saul and Jonathan 17And Davidlamentedwith this lamentationover Sauland over Jonathanhis son:18(Also he badethem teachthe childrenof Judah[the use of] the bow:behold, [it is] writtenin the bookof Jasher.) 19The beautyof Israelis slainupon thy high places:how are the mightyfallen! 20Tell[it] not in Gath, publish[it] not in the streetsof Askelon;lest the daughtersof the Philistinesrejoice, lest the daughtersof the uncircumcisedtriumph. 21Ye mountainsof Gilboa,[let there be] no dew, neither [let there be] rain, upon you, nor fieldsof offerings:for there the shieldof the mightyis vilely cast away, the shieldof Saul,[as though he had] not [been] anointedwith oil. 22From the bloodof the slain, from the fatof the mighty, the bowof Jonathanturnednot back, and the swordof Saulreturnednot empty. 23Sauland Jonathan[were] lovelyand pleasantin their lives, and in their deaththey were not divided:they were swifterthan eagles, they were strongerthan lions. 24Ye daughtersof Israel, weep overSaul, who clothedyou in scarlet, with [other] delights, who puton ornamentsof goldupon your apparel. 25How are the mightyfallenin the midstof the battle!O Jonathan,[thou wast] slainin thine high places. 26I am distressedfor thee, my brotherJonathan:verypleasanthast thou been unto me: thy loveto me was wonderful, passing the loveof women. 27How are the mightyfallen, and the weaponsof warperished! |
