Manasseh's Idolatrous Reign in Judah

(2 Kings 21:1-9)

1Manasseh[was] twelveyearsoldwhen he began to reign,and he reignedfiftyand fiveyearsin Jerusalem:2But did[that which was] evilin the sightof the LORD,like unto the abominationsof the heathen,whom the LORDhad cast outbeforethe childrenof Israel.3For he builtagainthe high placeswhich Hezekiahhis fatherhad broken down,and he reared upaltarsfor Baalim,and madegroves,and worshippedall the hostof heaven,and servedthem.4Also he builtaltarsin the houseof the LORD,whereof the LORDhad said,In Jerusalemshall my namebe for ever.5And he builtaltarsfor all the hostof heavenin the twocourtsof the houseof the LORD.6And he causedhis childrento pass throughthe firein the valleyof the sonof Hinnom:also he observed times,and used enchantments,and used witchcraft,and dealtwith a familiar spirit,and with wizards:he wroughtmuchevilin the sightof the LORD,to provoke him to anger.7And he seta carved image,the idolwhich he had made,in the houseof God,of which Godhad saidto Davidand to Solomonhis son,In this house,and in Jerusalem,which I have chosenbefore all the tribesof Israel,will I putmy namefor ever:8Neither will I any moreremovethe footof Israelfrom outof the landwhich I have appointedfor your fathers;so thatthey will take heedto doall that I have commandedthem, according to the whole lawand the statutesand the ordinancesby the handof Moses.9So ManassehmadeJudahand the inhabitantsof Jerusalemto err,[and] to doworsethan the heathen,whom the LORDhad destroyedbeforethe childrenof Israel.

Manasseh's Repentance and Restoration

(2 Kings 21:10-18)

10And the LORDspaketo Manasseh,and to his people:but they would not hearken.11Wherefore the LORDbroughtupon them the captains ofthe host ofthe kingof Assyria,which tookManassehamong the thorns,and bound himwith fetters,and carriedhim to Babylon.12And when he was in affliction,he besoughtthe LORDhis God,and humbledhimself greatlybeforethe Godof his fathers,13And prayedunto him: and he was intreatedof him, and heardhis supplication,and brought him againto Jerusaleminto his kingdom.Then Manassehknewthat the LORDhe [was] God.

14Now after thishe builta wallwithoutthe cityof David,on the west sideof Gihon,in the valley,even to the entering inat the fishgate,and compassedabout Ophel,and raised it upa very great height,and putcaptainsof warin all the fencedcitiesof Judah.15And he took awaythe strangegods,and the idolout of the houseof the LORD,and all the altarsthat he had builtin the mountof the houseof the LORD,and in Jerusalem,and cast[them] outof the city.16And he repairedthe altarof the LORD,and sacrificedthereon peaceofferingsand thank offerings,and commandedJudahto servethe LORDGodof Israel.17Neverthelessthe peopledid sacrificestill in the high places,[yet] unto the LORDtheir Godonly.

18Now the restof the actsof Manasseh,and his prayerunto his God,and the wordsof the seersthat spaketo him in the nameof the LORDGodof Israel,behold, they [are written] in the bookof the kingsof Israel.19His prayeralso, and [how God] was intreatedof him, and all his sin,and his trespass,and the placeswherein he builthigh places,and set upgrovesand graven images,beforehe was humbled:behold, they [are] writtenamong the sayingsof the seers.20So Manassehsleptwith his fathers,and they buriedhim in his own house:and Amonhis sonreignedin his stead.

Amon's Evil Reign in Judah

(2 Kings 21:19-26)

21Amon[was] twoand twentyyearsoldwhen he began to reign,and reignedtwoyearsin Jerusalem.22But he did[that which was] evilin the sightof the LORD,as didManassehhis father:for Amonsacrificedunto all the carved imageswhich Manassehhis fatherhad made,and servedthem;23And humblednot himself beforethe LORD,as Manassehhis fatherhad humbledhimself; but Amontrespassedmore and more.24And his servantsconspiredagainst him, and slewhim in his own house.25But the peopleof the landslewall them that had conspiredagainst kingAmon;and the peopleof the landmadeJosiahhis sonkingin his stead.
