Hezekiah's Good Reign in Judah

(2 Kings 18:1-12)

1Hezekiahbegan to reign[when he was] fiveand twentyyearsold,and he reignednineand twentyyearsin Jerusalem.And his mother'sname[was] Abijah,the daughterof Zechariah.2And he did[that which was] rightin the sightof the LORD,according to all that Davidhis fatherhad done.

Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple

3He in the firstyearof his reign,in the firstmonth,openedthe doorsof the houseof the LORD,and repairedthem.4And he brought inthe priestsand the Levites,and gathered them togetherinto the eaststreet,

5And saidunto them, Hearme, ye Levites,sanctifynow yourselves, and sanctifythe houseof the LORDGodof your fathers,and carry forththe filthinessout of the holy[place].6For our fathershave trespassed,and done[that which was] evilin the eyesof the LORDour God,and have forsakenhim, and have turned awaytheir facesfrom the habitationof the LORD,and turned[their] backs.7Also they have shut upthe doorsof the porch,and put outthe lamps,and have not burnedincensenor offeredburnt offeringsin the holy[place] unto the Godof Israel.8Wherefore the wrathof the LORDwas upon Judahand Jerusalem,and he hath deliveredthem to trouble,to astonishment,and to hissing,as ye seewith your eyes.9For, lo, our fathershave fallenby the sword,and our sonsand our daughtersand our wives[are] in captivityfor this.10Now [it is] in mine heartto makea covenantwith the LORDGodof Israel,that his fiercewrathmay turn awayfrom us.11My sons,be not now negligent:for the LORDhath chosenyou to standbeforehim, to servehim, and that ye should ministerunto him, and burn incense.

12Then the Levitesarose,Mahaththe sonof Amasai,and Joelthe sonof Azariah,of the sonsof the Kohathites:and of the sonsof Merari,Kishthe sonof Abdi,and Azariahthe sonof Jehalelel:and of the Gershonites;Joahthe sonof Zimmah,and Edenthe sonof Joah:13And of the sonsof Elizaphan;Shimri,and Jeiel:and of the sonsof Asaph;Zechariah,and Mattaniah:14And of the sonsof Heman;Jehiel,and Shimei:and of the sonsof Jeduthun;Shemaiah,and Uzziel.15And they gatheredtheir brethren,and sanctifiedthemselves, and came,according to the commandmentof the king,by the wordsof the LORD,to cleansethe houseof the LORD.16And the priestswentinto the inner partof the houseof the LORD,to cleanse[it], and brought outall the uncleannessthat they foundin the templeof the LORDinto the courtof the houseof the LORD.And the Levitestook[it], to carry [it] outabroadinto the brookKidron.17Now they beganon the first[day] of the firstmonthto sanctify,and on the eighthdayof the monthcamethey to the porchof the LORD:so they sanctifiedthe houseof the LORDin eightdays;and in the sixteenthday of the firstmonththey made an end.18Then they wentinto Hezekiahthe king,and said,We have cleansedall the houseof the LORD,and the altarof burnt offering,with all the vesselsthereof, and the shewbreadtable,with all the vesselsthereof.19Moreover all the vessels,which kingAhazin his reigndid cast awayin his transgression,have we preparedand sanctified,and, behold, they [are] beforethe altarof the LORD.

Hezekiah Restores Temple Worship

20Then Hezekiahthe kingrose early,and gatheredthe rulersof the city,and went upto the houseof the LORD.21And they broughtsevenbullocks,and sevenrams,and sevenlambs,and sevenhegoats,for a sin offeringfor the kingdom,and for the sanctuary,and for Judah.And he commandedthe prieststhe sonsof Aaronto offer[them] on the altarof the LORD.22So they killedthe bullocks,and the priestsreceivedthe blood,and sprinkled[it] on the altar:likewise, when they had killedthe rams,they sprinkledthe bloodupon the altar:they killedalso the lambs,and they sprinkledthe bloodupon the altar.23And they brought forththe he goats[for] the sin offeringbeforethe kingand the congregation;and they laidtheir handsupon them:24And the priestskilledthem, and they made reconciliationwith their bloodupon the altar,to make an atonementfor all Israel:for the kingcommanded[that] the burnt offeringand the sin offering[should be made] for all Israel.

25And he setthe Levitesin the houseof the LORDwith cymbals,with psalteries,and with harps,according to the commandmentof David,and of Gadthe king'sseer,and Nathanthe prophet:for [so was] the commandmentofthe LORDbyhis prophets.26And the Levitesstoodwith the instrumentsof David,and the priestswith the trumpets.27And Hezekiahcommandedto offerthe burnt offeringupon the altar.And whenthe burnt offeringbegan,the songof the LORDbegan[also] with the trumpets,and with the instruments[ordained] byDavidkingof Israel.28And all the congregationworshipped,and the singerssang,and the trumpeterssounded{08675;02690:08764}: [and] all [this continued] until the burnt offeringwas finished.

29And when they had made an endof offering,the kingand all that were presentwith him bowedthemselves, and worshipped.30Moreover Hezekiahthe kingand the princescommandedthe Levitesto sing praiseunto the LORDwith the wordsof David,and of Asaphthe seer.And they sang praiseswith gladness,and they bowed their headsand worshipped.

31Then Hezekiahansweredand said,Now ye have consecratedyourselves unto the LORD,come nearand bringsacrificesand thank offeringsinto the houseof the LORD.And the congregationbrought insacrificesand thank offerings;and as many as were of a freeheartburnt offerings.32And the numberof the burnt offerings,which the congregationbrought,was threescore and tenbullocks,an hundredrams,[and] two hundredlambs:all these [were] for a burnt offeringto the LORD.33And the consecrated things[were] sixhundredoxenand threethousandsheep.34But the priestswere too few,so that they couldnot flayall the burnt offerings:wherefore their brethrenthe Levitesdid helpthem, till the workwas ended,and until the [other] priestshad sanctifiedthemselves: for the Levites[were] more uprightin heartto sanctifythemselves than the priests.35And also the burnt offerings[were] in abundance,with the fatof the peace offerings,and the drink offeringsfor [every] burnt offering.So the serviceof the houseof the LORDwas set in order.36And Hezekiahrejoiced,and all the people,that Godhad preparedthe people:for the thingwas [done] suddenly.
