Uzziah Reigns in Judah

(2 Kings 14:17-22)

1Then all the peopleof JudahtookUzziah,who [was] sixteenyearsold,and made him kingin the room of his fatherAmaziah.2He builtEloth,and restoredit to Judah,afterthat the kingsleptwith his fathers.3Sixteenyearsold[was] Uzziahwhen he began to reign,and he reignedfiftyand twoyearsin Jerusalem.His mother'snamealso [was] Jecoliahof Jerusalem.4And he did[that which was] rightin the sightof the LORD,according to all that his fatherAmaziahdid.5And he soughtGodin the daysof Zechariah,who had understandingin the visionsof God:and as long ashe soughtthe LORD,Godmade him to prosper.

Uzziah's Victories

6And he went forthand warredagainst the Philistines,and brake downthe wallof Gath,and the wallof Jabneh,and the wallof Ashdod,and builtcitiesabout Ashdod,and among the Philistines.7And Godhelpedhim against the Philistines,and against the Arabiansthat dweltin Gurbaal,and the Mehunims.8And the Ammonitesgavegiftsto Uzziah:and his namespread abroad[even] to the enteringin of Egypt;for he strengthened[himself] exceedingly.9Moreover Uzziahbuilttowersin Jerusalemat the cornergate,and at the valleygate,and at the turning[of the wall], and fortifiedthem.10Also he builttowersin the desert,and diggedmanywells:for he had muchcattle,both in the low country,and in the plains:husbandmen[also], and vine dressersin the mountains,and in Carmel:for he lovedhusbandry.11Moreover Uzziahhad an hostof fightingmen,that went outto warby bands,according to the numberof their accountby the handof Jeielthe scribeand Maaseiahthe ruler,under the handof Hananiah,[one] of the king'scaptains.12The whole numberof the chiefof the fathersof the mighty menof valour[were] two thousandand sixhundred.13And under their hand[was] an army,threehundredthousandand seventhousandand fivehundred,that madewarwith mightypower,to helpthe kingagainst the enemy.14And Uzziahpreparedfor them throughout all the hostshields,and spears,and helmets,and habergeons,and bows,and slings[to cast] stones.15And he madein Jerusalemengines,inventedby cunning men,to be on the towersand upon the bulwarks,to shootarrowsand greatstoneswithal. And his namespreadfar abroad;for he was marvellouslyhelped,tillhe was strong.

Uzziah's Pride, Leprosy, Death

16But when he was strong,his heartwas lifted upto [his] destruction:for he transgressedagainst the LORDhis God,and wentinto the templeof the LORDto burn incenseupon the altarof incense.17And Azariahthe priestwent inafterhim, and with him fourscorepriestsof the LORD,[that were] valiantmen:18And they withstoodUzziahthe king,and saidunto him, [It appertaineth] not unto thee, Uzziah,to burn incenseunto the LORD,but to the prieststhe sonsof Aaron,that are consecratedto burn incense:go outof the sanctuary;for thou hast trespassed;neither [shall it be] for thine honourfrom the LORDGod.19Then Uzziahwas wroth,and [had] a censerin his handto burn incense:and while he was wrothwith the priests,the leprosyeven rose upin his foreheadbeforethe priestsin the houseof the LORD,from beside the incensealtar.20And Azariahthe chiefpriest,and all the priests,lookedupon him, and, behold, he [was] leprousin his forehead,and they thrust him outfrom thence; yea, himself hastedalso to go out,because the LORDhad smittenhim.21And Uzziahthe kingwas a leperunto the dayof his death,and dwelt ina severalhouse,[being] a leper;for he was cut offfrom the houseof the LORD:and Jothamhis son[was] over the king'shouse,judgingthe peopleof the land.

22Now the restof the actsof Uzziah,firstand last,did Isaiahthe prophet,the sonof Amoz,write.23So Uzziahsleptwith his fathers,and they buriedhim with his fathersin the fieldof the burialwhich [belonged] to the kings;for they said,He [is] a leper:and Jothamhis sonreignedin his stead.
