Asa's Treaty with Syria

(1 Kings 15:16-22)

1In the sixand thirtiethyearof the reignof AsaBaashakingof Israelcame upagainst Judah,and builtRamah,to the intent thathe might letnone go outor come into Asakingof Judah.2Then Asabrought outsilverand goldout of the treasuresof the houseof the LORDand of the king'shouse,and sentto Benhadadkingof Syria,that dweltat Damascus,saying,3[There is] a leaguebetween me and thee, as [there was] between my fatherand thy father:behold, I have sentthee silverand gold;go,breakthy leaguewith Baashakingof Israel,that he may departfrom me.4And Benhadadhearkenedunto kingAsa,and sentthe captainsof his armiesagainst the citiesof Israel;and they smoteIjon,and Dan,and Abelmaim,and all the storecitiesof Naphtali.5And it came to pass, when Baashaheard[it], that he left offbuildingof Ramah,and let his workcease.6Then Asathe kingtookall Judah;and they carried awaythe stonesof Ramah,and the timberthereof, wherewith Baashawas building;and he builttherewith Gebaand Mizpah.

Hanani's Message to Asa

7And at that timeHananithe seercameto Asakingof Judah,and saidunto him, Because thou hast reliedon the kingof Syria,and not reliedon the LORDthy God,therefore is the hostof the kingof Syriaescapedout of thine hand.8Were not the Ethiopiansand the Lubimsa hugehost,with verymanychariotsand horsemen?yet, because thou didst relyon the LORD,he deliveredthem into thine hand.9For the eyesof the LORDrun to and frothroughout the whole earth,to shew himself strongin the behalf of [them] whose heart[is] perfecttoward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly:therefore from henceforththou shalt havewars.10Then Asawas wrothwith the seer,and puthim in a prisonhouse;for [he was] in a ragewith him because of this [thing]. And Asaoppressed[some] of the peoplethe same time.

The Death and Burial of Asa

11And, behold, the actsof Asa,firstand last,lo, they [are] writtenin the bookof the kingsof Judahand Israel.12And Asain the thirtyand ninthyearof his reignwas diseasedin his feet,until his disease[was] exceeding[great]: yet in his diseasehe soughtnot to the LORD,but to the physicians.13And Asasleptwith his fathers,and diedin the oneand fortiethyearof his reign.14And they buriedhim in his own sepulchres,which he had madefor himself in the cityof David,and laidhim in the bedwhich was filledwith sweet odoursand divers kinds[of spices] preparedby the apothecaries'art:and they madea verygreatburningfor him.
