Civil War against Jeroboam
(Judges 20:18-23;2 Samuel 2:12-32;Matthew 13:33-33;Luke 13:20-21) 4And Abijahstood upupon mountZemaraim, which [is] in mountEphraim, and said,Hearme, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;5Ought ye not to knowthat the LORDGodof Israelgavethe kingdomover Israelto Davidfor ever,[even] to him and to his sonsby a covenantof salt?6Yet Jeroboamthe sonof Nebat, the servantof Solomonthe sonof David,is risen up,and hath rebelledagainst his lord.7And there are gatheredunto him vainmen, the childrenof Belial, and have strengthenedthemselves against Rehoboamthe sonof Solomon, when Rehoboamwas youngand tenderhearted, and could not withstandthem. 8And now ye thinkto withstandthe kingdomof the LORDin the handof the sonsof David;and ye [be] a greatmultitude, and [there are] with you goldencalves, which Jeroboammadeyou for gods.9Have ye not cast outthe priestsof the LORD,the sonsof Aaron, and the Levites, and have madeyou priestsafter the manner of the nationsof [other] lands?so that whosoever comethto consecratehimself with a youngbullockand sevenrams,[the same] may be a priestof [them that are] nogods.10But as for us, the LORD[is] our God,and we have not forsakenhim; and the priests, which ministerunto the LORD,[are] the sonsof Aaron, and the Levites[wait] upon [their] business:11And they burnunto the LORDevery morningand every eveningburnt sacrificesand sweetincense:the shewbreadalso [set they in order] upon the puretable;and the candlestickof goldwith the lampsthereof, to burnevery evening:for we keepthe chargeof the LORDour God;but ye have forsakenhim.12And, behold, Godhimself [is] with us for [our] captain, and his priestswith soundingtrumpetsto cry alarmagainst you. O childrenof Israel, fightye not against the LORDGodof your fathers;for ye shall not prosper. 13But Jeroboamcaused an ambushmentto comeaboutbehindthem: so they were beforeJudah, and the ambushment[was] behindthem.14And when Judahlooked back, behold, the battle[was] beforeand behind:and they criedunto the LORD,and the priestssounded{08675;02690:08764} with the trumpets.15Then the menof Judahgave a shout:and as the menof Judahshouted,it came to pass, that GodsmoteJeroboamand all IsraelbeforeAbijahand Judah.16And the childrenof IsraelfledbeforeJudah:and Goddeliveredthem into their hand.17And Abijahand his peopleslewthem with a greatslaughter:so there fell downslainof Israelfivehundredthousandchosenmen.18Thus the childrenof Israelwere broughtunder at that time, and the childrenof Judahprevailed, because they reliedupon the LORDGodof their fathers.19And AbijahpursuedafterJeroboam, and tookcitiesfrom him, Bethelwith the townsthereof, and Jeshanahwith the townsthereof, and Ephrainwith the townsthereof. The Death of Jeroboam
(1 Kings 14:19-20) 20Neither did Jeroboamrecoverstrengthagain in the daysof Abijah:and the LORDstruckhim, and he died. 21But Abijahwaxed mighty, and marriedfourteenwives, and begattwentyand twosons, and sixteendaughters.22And the restof the actsof Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings,[are] writtenin the storyof the prophetIddo. |
