Egypt Invades Judah

(1 Kings 14:25-31)

1And it came to pass, when Rehoboamhad establishedthe kingdom,and had strengthenedhimself, he forsookthe lawof the LORD,and all Israelwith him.2And it came to pass, [that] in the fifthyearof kingRehoboamShishakkingof Egyptcame upagainst Jerusalem,because they had transgressedagainst the LORD,3With twelve hundredchariots,and threescorethousandhorsemen:and the people[were] without numberthat camewith him out of Egypt;the Lubims,the Sukkiims,and the Ethiopians.4And he tookthe fencedcitieswhich [pertained] to Judah,and cameto Jerusalem.5Then cameShemaiahthe prophetto Rehoboam,and [to] the princesof Judah,that were gathered togetherto Jerusalembecauseof Shishak,and saidunto them, Thus saiththe LORD,Ye have forsakenme, and therefore have I alsoleftyou in the handof Shishak.6Whereupon the princesof Israeland the kinghumbledthemselves; and they said,The LORD[is] righteous.

7And when the LORDsawthat they humbledthemselves, the wordof the LORDcame to Shemaiah,saying,They have humbledthemselves; [therefore] I will not destroythem, but I will grantthem somedeliverance;and my wrathshall not be poured outupon Jerusalemby the handof Shishak.8Nevertheless they shall be his servants;that they may knowmy service,and the serviceof the kingdomsof the countries.

Egypt Plunders Jerusalem

9So Shishakkingof Egyptcame upagainst Jerusalem,and took awaythe treasuresof the houseof the LORD,and the treasuresof the king'shouse;he tookall: he carried awayalso the shieldsof goldwhich Solomonhad made.10Instead of which kingRehoboammadeshieldsof brass,and committed[them] to the handsof the chiefof the guard,that keptthe entranceof the king'shouse.11And whenthe kingenteredinto the houseof the LORD,the guardcameand fetchedthem, and brought them againinto the guardchamber.12And when he humbledhimself, the wrathof the LORDturnedfrom him, that he would not destroy[him] altogether:and also in Judahthingswent well.

The Death of Rehoboam

13So kingRehoboamstrengthenedhimself in Jerusalem,and reigned:for Rehoboam[was] oneand fortyyearsoldwhen he began to reign,and he reignedseventeenyearsin Jerusalem,the citywhich the LORDhad chosenout of all the tribesof Israel,to puthis namethere. And his mother'sname[was] Naamahan Ammonitess.14And he didevil,because he preparednot his heartto seekthe LORD.

15Now the actsof Rehoboam,firstand last,[are] they not writtenin the bookof Shemaiahthe prophet,and of Iddothe seerconcerning genealogies?And [there were] warsbetween Rehoboamand Jeroboamcontinually.16And Rehoboamsleptwith his fathers,and was buriedin the cityof David:and Abijahhis sonreignedin his stead.
