(1 Kings 12:1-15) 1And Rehoboamwentto Shechem:for to Shechemwere all Israelcometo make him king.2And it came to pass, when Jeroboamthe sonof Nebat,who [was] in Egypt,whither he had fledfrom the presenceof Solomonthe king,heard[it], that Jeroboamreturnedout of Egypt.3And they sentand calledhim. So Jeroboamand all Israelcameand spaketo Rehoboam,saying,4Thy fathermade our yokegrievous:now therefore easethou somewhat the grievousservitudeof thy father,and his heavyyokethat he putupon us, and we will servethee.5And he saidunto them, Come againunto me after threedays.And the peopledeparted. 6And kingRehoboamtook counselwith the oldmen that had stoodbeforeSolomonhis fatherwhile he yet lived,saying,Whatcounsel giveye [me] to returnanswerto this people?7And they spakeunto him, saying,If thou be kindto this people,and pleasethem, and speakgoodwordsto them, they will be thy servantsfor ever.8But he forsookthe counselwhich the old mengavehim, and took counselwith the young menthat were brought upwith him, that stoodbeforehim.9And he saidunto them, What advicegive ye that we may returnanswerto this people,which have spokento me, saying,Easesomewhat the yokethat thy fatherdid putupon us?10And the young menthat were brought upwith him spakeunto him, saying,Thus shalt thou answerthe peoplethat spakeunto thee, saying,Thy fathermadeour yokeheavy,but make thou [it] somewhat lighterfor us; thus shalt thou sayunto them, My little[finger] shall be thickerthan my father'sloins.11For whereasmy fatherputa heavyyokeupon you, I will put moreto your yoke:my fatherchastisedyou with whips,but I [will chastise you] with scorpions. 12So Jeroboamand all the peoplecameto Rehoboamon the thirdday,as the kingbade,saying,Come againto me on the thirdday.13And the kingansweredthem roughly;and kingRehoboamforsookthe counselof the old men,14And answeredthem after the adviceof the young men,saying,My fathermade your yokeheavy,but I will addthereto: my fatherchastisedyou with whips,but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.15So the kinghearkenednot unto the people:for the causewas of God,that the LORDmight performhis word,which he spakeby the handof Ahijahthe Shiloniteto Jeroboamthe sonof Nebat. (1 Kings 12:16-19) 16And when all Israel[saw] that the kingwould not hearkenunto them, the peopleansweredthe king,saying,What portionhave we in David?and [we have] none inheritancein the sonof Jesse:every manto your tents,O Israel:[and] now, David,seeto thine own house.So all Israelwentto their tents. 17But [as for] the childrenof Israelthat dweltin the citiesof Judah,Rehoboamreignedover them.18Then kingRehoboamsentHadoramthat [was] over the tribute;and the childrenof Israelstonedhim with stones,that he died.But kingRehoboammade speedto get him upto [his] chariot,to fleeto Jerusalem.19And Israelrebelledagainst the houseof Davidunto this day. |
