KJV + Strong's Israel Demands a King 1And it came to pass, when Samuelwas old,that he madehis sonsjudgesover Israel.2Now the nameof his firstbornwas Joel;and the nameof his second,Abiah:[they were] judgesin Beersheba.3And his sonswalkednot in his ways,but turned asideafterlucre,and tookbribes,and pervertedjudgment. 4Then all the eldersof Israelgathered themselves together,and cameto Samuelunto Ramah,5And saidunto him, Behold, thou art old,and thy sonswalknot in thy ways:now makeus a kingto judgeus like all the nations.6But the thingdispleasedSamuel,when they said,Giveus a kingto judgeus. And Samuelprayedunto the LORD.7And the LORDsaidunto Samuel,Hearkenunto the voiceof the peoplein all that they sayunto thee: for they have not rejectedthee, but they have rejectedme, that I should not reignover them.8According to all the workswhich they have donesince the daythat I brought them upout of Egypteven unto this day,wherewith they have forsakenme, and servedothergods,so dothey also unto thee.9Now therefore hearkenunto their voice:howbeityet protestsolemnlyunto them, and shewthem the mannerof the kingthat shall reignover them. Samuel's Warning About Kings 10And Samueltoldall the wordsof the LORDunto the peoplethat askedof him a king.11And he said,This will be the mannerof the kingthat shall reignover you: He will takeyour sons,and appoint[them] for himself, for his chariots,and [to be] his horsemen;and [some] shall runbeforehis chariots.12And he will appointhim captainsover thousands,and captainsover fifties;and [will set them] to earhis ground,and to reaphis harvest,and to makehis instrumentsof war,and instrumentsof his chariots.13And he will takeyour daughters[to be] confectionaries,and [to be] cooks,and [to be] bakers.14And he will takeyour fields,and your vineyards,and your oliveyards,[even] the best[of them], and give[them] to his servants.15And he will take the tenthof your seed,and of your vineyards,and giveto his officers,and to his servants.16And he will takeyour menservants,and your maidservants,and your goodliestyoung men,and your asses,and put[them] to his work.17He will take the tenthof your sheep:and ye shall be his servants.18And ye shall cry outin that daybecauseof your kingwhich ye shall have chosenyou; and the LORDwill not hearyou in that day. God Grants the Request 19Nevertheless the peoplerefusedto obeythe voiceof Samuel;and they said,Nay; but we will have a kingover us;20That we also may be like all the nations;and that our kingmay judgeus, and go outbeforeus, and fightour battles.21And Samuelheardall the wordsof the people,and he rehearsedthem in the earsof the LORD.22And the LORDsaidto Samuel,Hearkenunto their voice,and makethem a king.And Samuelsaidunto the menof Israel,Goye every manunto his city. |
