Philistines Gather against Israel

1And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistinesgatheredtheir armiestogetherfor warfare,to fightwith Israel. And Achishsaidunto David,Knowthou assuredly, that thou shalt go outwith me to battle, thou and thy men.2And Davidsaidto Achish,Surelythou shalt knowwhat thy servantcan do.And Achishsaidto David,Therefore will I makethee keeperof mine headfor ever.

3Now Samuelwas dead, and all Israelhad lamentedhim, and buriedhim in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saulhad put awaythose that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.4And the Philistinesgathered themselves together, and cameand pitchedin Shunem:and Saulgatheredall Israeltogether, and they pitchedin Gilboa.5And when Saulsawthe hostof the Philistines,he was afraid, and his heartgreatlytrembled.6And when Saulenquiredof the LORD,the LORDansweredhim not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

Saul and the Medium of Endor

7Then saidSaulunto his servants,Seekme a womanthat hatha familiar spirit, that I may goto her, and enquireof her. And his servantssaidto him, Behold, [there is] a womanthat hatha familiar spiritat Endor.

8And Sauldisguisedhimself, and put onotherraiment, and he went, and twomenwith him, and they cameto the womanby night:and he said,I pray thee, divineunto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me [him] up,whom I shall nameunto thee.9And the womansaidunto him, Behold, thou knowestwhat Saulhath done, how he hath cut offthose that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land:wherefore then layest thou a snarefor my life,to cause me to die?10And Saulswareto her by the LORD,saying,[As] the LORDliveth, there shallno punishmenthappento thee for this thing.11Then saidthe woman,Whom shall I bring upunto thee? And he said,Bring me upSamuel.12And when the womansawSamuel, she criedwith a loudvoice:and the womanspaketo Saul, saying,Why hast thou deceivedme? for thou [art] Saul.13And the kingsaidunto her, Be not afraid:for what sawestthou? And the womansaidunto Saul,I sawgodsascendingout of the earth.14And he saidunto her, What form[is] he of? And she said,An oldmancometh up;and he [is] coveredwith a mantle. And Saulperceivedthat it [was] Samuel, and he stoopedwith [his] faceto the ground, and bowedhimself.

15And Samuelsaidto Saul,Why hast thou disquietedme, to bring me up?And Saulanswered,I am soredistressed;for the Philistinesmake waragainst me, and Godis departedfrom me, and answerethme no more, neither byprophets, nor by dreams:therefore I have calledthee, that thou mayest make knownunto me what I shall do.16Then saidSamuel,Wherefore then dost thou askof me, seeing the LORDis departedfrom thee, and is become thine enemy?17And the LORDhath doneto him, as he spakeby me:for the LORDhath rentthe kingdomout of thine hand, and givenit to thy neighbour,[even] to David:18Becausethou obeyedstnot the voiceof the LORD,nor executedsthis fiercewrathupon Amalek, therefore hath the LORDdonethis thingunto thee this day.19Moreover the LORDwill also deliverIsraelwith thee into the handof the Philistines:and to morrow[shalt] thou and thy sons[be] with me: the LORDalso shall deliverthe hostof Israelinto the handof the Philistines.

20Then Saulfellstraightwayallalongon the earth, and was soreafraid, because of the wordsof Samuel:and there was no strengthin him; for he had eatenno breadall the day,nor all the night.21And the womancameunto Saul, and sawthat he was soretroubled, and saidunto him, Behold, thine handmaidhath obeyedthy voice, and I have putmy lifein my hand, and have hearkenedunto thy wordswhich thou spakestunto me.22Now therefore, I pray thee, hearkenthou also unto the voiceof thine handmaid, and let me seta morselof breadbeforethee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goeston thy way.23But he refused, and said,I will not eat.But his servants, together with the woman, compelledhim; and he hearkenedunto their voice. So he arosefrom the earth, and satupon the bed.24And the womanhad a fatcalfin the house;and she hasted, and killedit, and tookflour, and kneaded[it], and did bakeunleavened breadthereof:25And she brought[it] beforeSaul, and beforehis servants;and they did eat. Then they rose up,and went awaythat night.
