The Death of Samuel

1And Samueldied;and all the Israeliteswere gathered together, and lamentedhim, and buriedhim in his houseat Ramah. And Davidarose, and went downto the wildernessof Paran.

David and Nabal

2And [there was] a manin Maon, whose possessions[were] in Carmel;and the man[was] verygreat, and he had threethousandsheep, and a thousandgoats:and he was shearinghis sheepin Carmel.3Now the nameof the man[was] Nabal;and the nameof his wifeAbigail:and [she was] a womanof goodunderstanding, and of a beautifulcountenance:but the man[was] churlishand evilin his doings;and he [was] of the house of Caleb.4And Davidheardin the wildernessthat Nabaldid shearhis sheep.5And Davidsent outtenyoung men,and Davidsaidunto the young men,Get you upto Carmel, and goto Nabal, and greethim in my name:6And thus shall ye sayto him that liveth[in prosperity], Peace[be] both to thee, and peace[be] to thine house, and peace[be] unto all that thou hast.7And now I have heardthat thou hast shearers:now thy shepherdswhich were with us, we hurtthem not, neither was there oughtmissingunto them, all the whilethey were in Carmel.8Askthy young men,and they will shewthee. Wherefore let the young menfindfavourin thine eyes:for we comein a goodday:give,I pray thee, whatsoever comethto thine handunto thy servants, and to thy sonDavid.

9And when David'syoung mencame, they spaketo Nabalaccording to all those wordsin the nameof David, and ceased.10And NabalansweredDavid'sservants, and said,Who [is] David?and who [is] the sonof Jesse?there be manyservantsnow a daysthat break awayevery manfromhis master.11Shall I then takemy bread, and my water, and my fleshthat I have killedfor my shearers, and give[it] unto men, whom I knownot whence they [be]?12So David'syoung menturnedtheir way,and went again, and cameand toldhim all those sayings.13And Davidsaidunto his men,Gird ye onevery manhis sword. And they girded onevery manhis sword;and Davidalso girded onhis sword:and there went upafterDavidabout fourhundredmen;and two hundredabodeby the stuff.

14But oneof the young mentoldAbigail,Nabal'swife, saying,Behold, Davidsentmessengersout of the wildernessto saluteour master;and he railedon them.15But the men[were] verygoodunto us, and we were not hurt, neither missedwe any thing,as long aswe were conversantwith them, when we were in the fields:16They were a wallunto us both by nightand day,all the whilewe were with them keepingthe sheep.17Now therefore knowand considerwhat thou wilt do;for evilis determinedagainst our master, and against all his household:for he [is such] a sonof Belial, that [a man] cannot speakto him.

Abigail Intercedes for Nabal

18Then Abigailmade haste, and tooktwo hundredloaves, and twobottlesof wine, and fivesheepready dressed, and fivemeasuresof parched[corn], and an hundredclusters of raisins, and two hundredcakesof figs, and laid[them] on asses.19And she saidunto her servants,Go onbeforeme; behold, I comeafteryou. But she toldnot her husbandNabal.20And it was [so, as] she rodeon the ass, that she came downby the covertof the hill, and, behold, Davidand his mencame downagainsther; and she metthem.21Now Davidhad said,Surely in vainhave I keptall that this[fellow] hath in the wilderness,so that nothingwas missedof all that [pertained] unto him: and he hath requitedme evilfor good.22Soand morealso doGodunto the enemiesof David,if I leaveof all that [pertain] to him bythe morninglightany that pissethagainst the wall.

23And when AbigailsawDavid, she hasted, and lighted offthe ass,and fellbeforeDavidon her face, and bowedherself to the ground,24And fellat his feet, and said,Upon me, my lord,[upon] me [let this] iniquity[be]: and let thine handmaid,I pray thee, speakin thine audience, and hearthe wordsof thine handmaid.25Letnot my lord,I pray thee, regardthis manof Belial,[even] Nabal:for as his name[is], so [is] he; Nabal[is] his name, and folly[is] with him: but I thine handmaidsawnot the young menof my lord, whom thou didst send.

26Now therefore, my lord,[as] the LORDliveth, and [as] thy soulliveth, seeing the LORDhath withholdenthee from comingto [shed] blood, and from avengingthyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seekevilto my lord,be as Nabal.27And now this blessingwhich thine handmaidhath broughtunto my lord, let it even be givenunto the young menthat followmy lord.28I pray thee, forgivethe trespassof thine handmaid:for the LORDwill certainlymakemy lorda surehouse;because my lordfighteththe battlesof the LORD,and evilhath not been foundin thee [all] thy days.29Yet a manis risento pursuethee, and to seekthy soul:but the soulof my lordshall be boundin the bundleof lifewith the LORDthy God;and the soulsof thine enemies, them shall he sling out,[as out] of the middleof a sling.30And it shall come to pass, when the LORDshall have doneto my lordaccording to all the goodthat he hath spokenconcerning thee, and shall have appointedthee rulerover Israel;31That this shall be no griefunto thee, nor offenceof heartunto my lord, either that thou hast shedbloodcauseless,or that my lordhath avengedhimself: but when the LORDshall have dealt wellwith my lord, then rememberthine handmaid.

32And Davidsaidto Abigail,Blessed[be] the LORDGodof Israel, which sentthee this dayto meetme:33And blessed[be] thy advice, and blessed[be] thou, which hast keptme this dayfrom comingto [shed] blood, and from avengingmyself with mine own hand.34For in very deed,[as] the LORDGodof Israelliveth, which hath kept me backfrom hurtingthee, exceptthou hadst hastedand cometo meetme, surely there had not been leftunto Nabalby the morninglightany that pissethagainst the wall.35So Davidreceivedof her hand[that] which she had broughthim, and saidunto her, Go upin peaceto thine house;see,I have hearkenedto thy voice, and have acceptedthy person.

36And Abigailcameto Nabal;and, behold, he held a feastin his house, like the feastof a king;and Nabal'sheart[was] merrywithin him, for he [was] verydrunken:wherefore she toldhim nothing, lessor more, until the morninglight.37But it came to pass in the morning, when the winewas gone outof Nabal, and his wifehad toldhim these things, that his heartdiedwithinhim, and he became [as] a stone.38And it came to pass about tendays[after], that the LORDsmoteNabal, that he died.

David Marries Abigail

39And when Davidheardthat Nabalwas dead,he said,Blessed[be] the LORD,that hath pleadedthe causeof my reproachfrom the handof Nabal, and hath kepthis servantfrom evil:for the LORDhath returnedthe wickednessof Nabalupon his own head. And Davidsentand communedwith Abigail,to takeher to him to wife.40And when the servantsof Davidwere cometo Abigailto Carmel, they spakeunto her, saying,Davidsentus unto thee, to takethee to him to wife.41And she arose, and bowedherself on [her] faceto the earth, and said,Behold, [let] thine handmaid[be] a servantto washthe feetof the servantsof my lord.42And Abigailhasted, and arose, and rodeupon an ass, with fivedamselsof hers that wentafterher; and she wentafterthe messengersof David, and became his wife.

43Davidalso tookAhinoamof Jezreel;and they were also bothof them his wives.

44But Saulhad givenMichalhis daughter,David'swife,to Phaltithe sonof Laish, which [was] of Gallim.
