(Leviticus 20:1-9;Leviticus 26:14-39;Deuteronomy 28:15-68;1 Kings 13:11-34) 1Samuelalso saidunto Saul,The LORDsentme to anointthee [to be] kingover his people, over Israel:now therefore hearkenthou unto the voiceof the wordsof the LORD.2Thus saiththe LORDof hosts,I remember[that] which Amalekdidto Israel, how he laid[wait] for him in the way, when he came upfrom Egypt.3Now goand smiteAmalek, and utterly destroyall that they have, and sparethem not; but slayboth manand woman, infantand suckling, oxand sheep, cameland ass. 4And Saulgatheredthe peopletogether, and numberedthem in Telaim, two hundredthousandfootmen, and tenthousandmenof Judah.5And Saulcameto a cityof Amalek, and laid waitin the valley.6And Saulsaidunto the Kenites,Go,depart, get you downfrom amongthe Amalekites, lest I destroyyou with them: for ye shewedkindnessto all the childrenof Israel, when they came upout of Egypt. So the Kenitesdepartedfrom amongthe Amalekites.7And Saulsmotethe Amalekitesfrom Havilah[until] thou comestto Shur, that [is] over againstEgypt.8And he tookAgagthe kingof the Amalekitesalive, and utterly destroyedall the peoplewith the edgeof the sword.9But Sauland the peoplesparedAgag, and the bestof the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all [that was] good, and wouldnot utterly destroythem: but every thing[that was] vileand refuse, that they destroyed utterly. Samuel Denounces Saul 10Then came the wordof the LORDunto Samuel,saying,11It repentethme that I have set upSaul[to be] king:for he is turned backfrom followingme, and hath not performedmy commandments. And it grievedSamuel;and he criedunto the LORDall night.12And when Samuelrose earlyto meetSaulin the morning,it was toldSamuel, saying,Saulcameto Carmel, and, behold, he set him upa place, and is gone about, and passed on,and gone downto Gilgal.13And Samuelcameto Saul:and Saulsaidunto him, Blessed[be] thou of the LORD:I have performedthe commandmentof the LORD.14And Samuelsaid,What [meaneth] then this bleatingof the sheepin mine ears, and the lowingof the oxenwhich I hear?15And Saulsaid,They have broughtthem from the Amalekites:for the peoplesparedthe bestof the sheepand of the oxen,to sacrificeunto the LORDthy God;and the restwe have utterly destroyed.16Then Samuelsaidunto Saul,Stay, and I will tellthee what the LORDhath saidto me this night. And he saidunto him, Say on. 17And Samuelsaid,When thou [wast] littlein thine own sight,[wast] thou not [made] the headof the tribesof Israel, and the LORDanointedthee kingover Israel?18And the LORDsentthee on a journey, and said,Goand utterly destroythe sinnersthe Amalekites, and fightagainst them until they be consumed.19Wherefore then didst thou not obeythe voiceof the LORD,but didst flyupon the spoil, and didstevilin the sightof the LORD? 20And Saulsaidunto Samuel,Yea, I have obeyedthe voiceof the LORD,and have gonethe waywhich the LORDsentme, and have broughtAgagthe kingof Amalek, and have utterly destroyedthe Amalekites.21But the peopletookof the spoil, sheepand oxen, the chiefof the things which should have been utterly destroyed,to sacrificeunto the LORDthy Godin Gilgal. 22And Samuelsaid,Hath the LORD[as great] delightin burnt offeringsand sacrifices,as in obeyingthe voiceof the LORD?Behold, to obey[is] betterthan sacrifice,[and] to hearkenthan the fatof rams. 23For rebellion[is as] the sinof witchcraft, and stubbornness[is as] iniquityand idolatry.Because thou hast rejectedthe wordof the LORD,he hath also rejectedthee from [being] king. Saul's Confession 24And Saulsaidunto Samuel,I have sinned:for I have transgressedthe commandmentof the LORD,and thy words:because I fearedthe people, and obeyedtheir voice.25Now therefore, I pray thee, pardonmy sin,and turn againwith me, that I may worshipthe LORD.26And Samuelsaidunto Saul,I will not returnwith thee: for thou hast rejectedthe wordof the LORD,and the LORDhath rejectedthee from being kingover Israel.27And as Samuelturned aboutto go away,he laid holdupon the skirtof his mantle, and it rent.28And Samuelsaidunto him, The LORDhath rentthe kingdomof Israelfrom thee this day,and hath givenit to a neighbourof thine, [that is] betterthan thou.29And also the Strengthof Israelwill not lienor repent:for he [is] not a man, that he should repent.30Then he said,I have sinned:[yet] honourme now, I pray thee, before the eldersof my people, and before Israel, and turn againwith me, that I may worshipthe LORDthy God.31So Samuelturned againafterSaul;and Saulworshippedthe LORD. 32Then saidSamuel,Bring ye hitherto me Agagthe kingof the Amalekites. And Agagcameunto him delicately. And Agagsaid,Surelythe bitternessof deathis past.33And Samuelsaid,As thy swordhath made womenchildless,so shall thy motherbe childlessamong women. And SamuelhewedAgagin piecesbeforethe LORDin Gilgal. 34Then Samuelwentto Ramah;and Saulwent upto his houseto Gibeahof Saul.35And Samuelcame no moreto seeSauluntil the dayof his death:neverthelessSamuelmournedfor Saul:and the LORDrepentedthat he had made Saulkingover Israel. |
