David Instructs Solomon

(Psalm 37:1-40)

1Now the daysof Daviddrew nighthat he should die;and he chargedSolomonhis son,saying,2I gothe wayof all the earth:be thou strongtherefore, and shew thyself a man;3And keepthe chargeof the LORDthy God,to walkin his ways,to keephis statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies,as it is writtenin the lawof Moses, that thou mayest prosperin all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnestthyself:4That the LORDmay continuehis wordwhich he spakeconcerning me, saying,If thy childrentake heedto their way,to walkbeforeme in truthwith all their heartand with all their soul, there shall not failthee (saidhe) a manon the throneof Israel.

5Moreover thou knowestalso what Joabthe sonof Zeruiahdidto me, [and] what he didto the twocaptainsof the hostsof Israel, unto Abnerthe sonof Ner,and unto Amasathe sonof Jether, whom he slew, and shedthe bloodof warin peace, and putthe bloodof warupon his girdlethat [was] about his loins, and in his shoesthat [were] on his feet.6Dotherefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar headgo downto the gravein peace.7But shewkindnessunto the sonsof Barzillaithe Gileadite, and let them be of those that eatat thy table:for so they cameto me when I fledbecauseof Absalomthy brother.8And, behold, [thou hast] with thee Shimeithe sonof Gera,a Benjamiteof Bahurim, which cursedme with a grievouscursein the daywhen I wentto Mahanaim:but he came downto meetme at Jordan, and I swareto him by the LORD,saying,I will not put thee to deathwith the sword.9Now therefore hold him not guiltless:for thou [art] a wiseman, and knowestwhat thou oughtest to dounto him; but his hoar headbring thou downto the gravewith blood.

Solomon's Reign Established

13And Adonijahthe sonof Haggithcameto Bathshebathe motherof Solomon. And she said,Comestthou peaceably? And he said,Peaceably.14He saidmoreover, I have somewhat to sayunto thee. And she said,Say on.15And he said,Thou knowestthat the kingdomwas mine, and [that] all Israelsettheir faceson me, that I should reign:howbeit the kingdomis turned about, and is become my brother's:for it was his from the LORD.16And now I askonepetitionof thee, denymenot. And she saidunto him, Say on.17And he said,Speak,I pray thee, unto Solomonthe king,(for he will not saytheenay,) that he giveme Abishagthe Shunammiteto wife.18And Bathshebasaid,Well;I will speakfor thee unto the king.

The Execution of Adonijah

19Bathshebatherefore wentunto kingSolomon,to speakunto him for Adonijah. And the kingrose upto meether, and bowedhimself unto her, and sat downon his throne, and caused a seatto be setfor the king'smother;and she saton his right hand.20Then she said,I desireonesmallpetitionof thee; [I pray thee], saymenot nay.And the kingsaidunto her, Ask on,my mother:for I will not saytheenay.21And she said,Let Abishagthe Shunammitebe givento Adonijahthy brotherto wife.22And kingSolomonansweredand saidunto his mother,And why dost thou askAbishagthe Shunammitefor Adonijah?askfor him the kingdomalso; for he [is] mine elderbrother;even for him, and for Abiatharthe priest, and for Joabthe sonof Zeruiah.23Then kingSolomonswareby the LORD,saying,Goddoso to me, and more also,if Adonijahhave not spokenthis wordagainst his own life.24Now therefore, [as] the LORDliveth, which hath establishedme, and setme on the throneof Davidmy father, and who hath mademe an house,as he promised,Adonijahshall be put to deaththis day.25And kingSolomonsentby the handof Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada;and he fellupon him that he died.

26And unto Abiatharthe priestsaidthe king,Getthee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields;for thou [art] worthyof death:but I will not at this timeput thee to death, because thou barestthe arkof the LordGODbeforeDavidmy father, and because thou hast been afflictedin all wherein my fatherwas afflicted.27So Solomonthrust outAbiatharfrom being priestunto the LORD;that he might fulfilthe wordof the LORD,which he spakeconcerning the houseof Eliin Shiloh.

And Benaiahbroughtthe kingwordagain, saying,Thus saidJoab, and thus he answeredme.31And the kingsaidunto him, Doas he hath said, and fallupon him, and buryhim; that thou mayest take awaythe innocentblood, which Joabshed, from me, and from the houseof my father.32And the LORDshall returnhis bloodupon his own head, who fellupon twomenmore righteousand betterthan he, and slewthem with the sword,my fatherDavidnot knowing[thereof, to wit], Abnerthe sonof Ner,captainof the hostof Israel, and Amasathe sonof Jether, captainof the hostof Judah.33Their bloodshall therefore returnupon the headof Joab, and upon the headof his seedfor ever:but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peaceforeverfrom the LORD.34So Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiadawent up,and fellupon him, and slewhim: and he was buriedin his own housein the wilderness.35And the kingputBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiadain his room over the host:and Zadokthe priestdid the kingputin the room of Abiathar.

36And the kingsentand calledfor Shimei, and saidunto him, Buildthee an housein Jerusalem, and dwellthere, and go not forththence any whither.37For it shall be, [that] on the daythou goest out,and passest overthe brookKidron, thou shalt knowfor certainthat thou shalt surelydie:thy bloodshall be upon thine own head.38And Shimeisaidunto the king,The saying[is] good:as my lordthe kinghath said,so will thy servantdo. And Shimeidweltin Jerusalemmanydays.

39And it came to pass at the endof threeyears, that twoof the servantsof Shimeiran awayunto Achishsonof Maachahkingof Gath. And they toldShimei, saying,Behold, thy servants[be] in Gath.40And Shimeiarose, and saddledhis ass,and wentto Gathto Achishto seekhis servants:and Shimeiwent, and broughthis servantsfrom Gath.41And it was toldSolomonthat Shimeihad gonefrom Jerusalemto Gath, and was come again.42And the kingsentand calledfor Shimei, and saidunto him, Did I not make thee to swearby the LORD,and protestedunto thee, saying,Knowfor a certain,on the daythou goest out,and walkestabroad any whither, that thou shalt surelydie?and thou saidstunto me, The word[that] I have heard[is] good.43Why then hast thou not keptthe oathof the LORD,and the commandmentthat I have chargedthee with?44The kingsaidmoreover to Shimei,Thou knowestall the wickednesswhich thine heartis privy to,that thou didstto Davidmy father:therefore the LORDshall returnthy wickednessupon thine own head;45And kingSolomon[shall be] blessed, and the throneof Davidshall be establishedbeforethe LORDforever.46So the kingcommandedBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiada;which went out,and fellupon him, that he died. And the kingdomwas establishedin the handof Solomon.
