David's Repentance Spares Jerusalem 14So the LORDsentpestilenceupon Israel:and there fellof Israelseventythousandmen.15And Godsentan angelunto Jerusalemto destroyit: and as he was destroying, the LORDbeheld, and he repentedhim of the evil, and saidto the angelthat destroyed,It is enough, staynow thine hand. And the angelof the LORDstoodby the threshingfloorof Ornanthe Jebusite.16And Davidlifted uphis eyes, and sawthe angelof the LORDstandbetween the earthand the heaven, having a drawnswordin his handstretched outover Jerusalem. Then Davidand the elders[of Israel, who were] clothedin sackcloth, fellupon their faces.17And Davidsaidunto God,[Is it] not I [that] commandedthe peopleto be numbered?even I it is that have sinnedand done evilindeed;but [as for] these sheep, what have they done?let thine hand,I pray thee, O LORDmy God,be on me, and on my father'shouse;but not on thy people, that they should be plagued. David Builds an Altar
(2 Samuel 24:18-25) 18Then the angelof the LORDcommandedGadto sayto David, that Davidshould go up,and set upan altarunto the LORDin the threshingfloorof Ornanthe Jebusite.19And Davidwent upat the sayingof Gad,which he spakein the nameof the LORD.20And Ornanturned back, and sawthe angel;and his foursonswith him hidthemselves. Now Ornanwas threshingwheat.21And as Davidcameto Ornan,Ornanlookedand sawDavid, and went outof the threshingfloor, and bowedhimself to Davidwith [his] faceto the ground.22Then Davidsaidto Ornan,Grantme the placeof [this] threshingfloor, that I may buildan altartherein unto the LORD:thou shalt grantit me for the fullprice:that the plaguemay be stayedfrom the people.23And Ornansaidunto David,Take[it] to thee, and let my lordthe kingdo[that which is] goodin his eyes:lo,I give[thee] the oxen[also] for burnt offerings, and the threshing instrumentsfor wood, and the wheatfor the meat offering;I giveit all.24And kingDavidsaidto Ornan,Nay; but I will verilybuyit for the fullprice:for I will not take[that] which [is] thine for the LORD,nor offerburnt offeringswithout cost.25So Davidgaveto Ornanfor the placesixhundredshekelsof goldby weight.26And Davidbuiltthere an altarunto the LORD,and offeredburnt offeringsand peace offerings, and calledupon the LORD;and he answeredhim from heavenby fireupon the altarof burnt offering.27And the LORDcommandedthe angel;and he put uphis swordagaininto the sheaththereof. 28At that timewhen Davidsawthat the LORDhad answeredhim in the threshingfloorof Ornanthe Jebusite, then he sacrificedthere.29For the tabernacleof the LORD,which Mosesmadein the wilderness, and the altarof the burnt offering,[were] at that seasonin the high placeat Gibeon.30But Davidcouldnot gobeforeit to enquireof God:for he was afraidbecauseof the swordof the angelof the LORD. |
