David Becomes King over All Israel

(2 Samuel 5:1-5)

1Then all Israelgatheredthemselves to Davidunto Hebron,saying,Behold, we [are] thy boneand thy flesh.2And moreover in timepast,even when Saulwas king,thou [wast] he that leddest outand broughtest inIsrael:and the LORDthy Godsaidunto thee, Thou shalt feedmy peopleIsrael,and thou shalt be rulerover my peopleIsrael.3Therefore cameall the eldersof Israelto the kingto Hebron;and Davidmadea covenantwith them in Hebronbeforethe LORD;and they anointedDavidkingover Israel,according to the wordof the LORDbySamuel.

David Conquers Jerusalem

(2 Samuel 5:6-11)

4And Davidand all Israelwentto Jerusalem,which [is] Jebus;where the Jebusites[were], the inhabitantsof the land.5And the inhabitantsof Jebussaidto David,Thou shalt not comehither. Nevertheless Davidtookthe castleof Zion,which [is] the cityof David.6And Davidsaid,Whosoever smiteththe Jebusitesfirstshall be chiefand captain.So Joabthe sonof Zeruiahwentfirstup,and was chief.7And Daviddweltin the castle;therefore they calledit the cityof David.8And he builtthe cityround about,even from Milloround about:and Joabrepairedthe restof the city.9So Davidwaxedgreaterand greater:for the LORDof hosts[was] with him.

David's Mightiest Warriors

(2 Samuel 23:8-39;1 Chronicles 11:20-47)

10These also [are] the chiefof the mighty menwhom Davidhad, who strengthenedthemselves with him in his kingdom,[and] with all Israel,to make him king,according to the wordof the LORDconcerning Israel.11And this [is] the numberof the mighty menwhom Davidhad; Jashobeam,an Hachmonite,the chiefof the captains:he lifted uphis spearagainst threehundredslain[by him] at onetime.

12And afterhim [was] Eleazarthe sonof Dodo,the Ahohite,who [was one] of the threemighties.13He was with Davidat Pasdammim,and there the Philistineswere gathered togetherto battle,where was a parcelof groundfullof barley;and the peoplefledfrom beforethe Philistines.14And they setthemselves in the midstof [that] parcel,and deliveredit, and slewthe Philistines;and the LORDsaved[them] by a greatdeliverance.

15Now threeof the thirtycaptainswent downto the rockto David,into the caveof Adullam;and the hostof the Philistinesencampedin the valleyof Rephaim.16And David[was] then in the hold,and the Philistines'garrison[was] then at Bethlehem.17And Davidlonged,and said,Oh that one would give me drinkof the waterof the wellof Bethlehem,that [is] at the gate!18And the threebrake throughthe hostof the Philistines,and drewwaterout of the wellof Bethlehem,that [was] by the gate,and took[it], and brought[it] to David:but Davidwouldnot drink[of] it, but poured it outto the LORD,19And said,My Godforbidit me, that I should dothis thing:shall I drinkthe bloodof these menthat have put their lives in jeopardy?for with [the jeopardy of] their livesthey broughtit. Therefore he wouldnot drinkit. These things didthese threemightiest.

David's Thirty Mighty Men

20And Abishaithe brotherof Joab,he was chiefof the three:for lifting uphis spearagainst threehundred,he slew[them], and had a nameamong the three.21Of the three,he was more honourablethan the two;for he was their captain:howbeit he attainednot to the [first] three.

22Benaiahthe sonof Jehoiada,the sonof a valiantmanof Kabzeel,who had done manyacts;he slewtwolionlike menof Moab:also he went downand slewa lionina pitin a snowyday.23And he slewan Egyptian,a manof [great] stature,fivecubitshigh; and in the Egyptian'shand[was] a spearlike a weaver'sbeam;and he went downto him with a staff,and pluckedthe spearout of the Egyptian'shand,and slewhim with his own spear.24These [things] didBenaiahthe sonof Jehoiada,and had the nameamong the threemighties.25Behold,he was honourableamong the thirty,but attainednot to the [first] three:and Davidsethim over his guard.
