But because I speak the truthIn this phrase, Jesus emphasizes His role as the embodiment of truth, aligning with
John 14:6 where He declares Himself the way, the truth, and the life. The truth He speaks is not just factual accuracy but divine revelation, contrasting with the lies of the world. This reflects the prophetic role of Jesus as the ultimate prophet, fulfilling
Deuteronomy 18:18. His truth is rooted in the eternal nature of God, as seen in
Psalm 119:160, where the entirety of God's word is truth.
you do not believe Me!
This highlights the spiritual blindness and hardness of heart among His listeners, particularly the Pharisees, who are unable to accept Jesus' divine authority and message. This disbelief fulfills the prophecy ofIsaiah 6:9-10, where the people would hear but not understand. The cultural context of first-century Judaism, with its strict adherence to the Law and skepticism of new teachings, contributes to their unbelief. This phrase also connects toJohn 1:11, where Jesus came to His own, but His own did not receive Him, illustrating the rejection He faced despite His truthfulness.

The Consequences of Rejecting TruthRejecting the truth of Jesus leads to spiritual blindness and separation from God. We must be vigilant in seeking and adhering to the truth.

But becauseThe Lord has just unmasked the religious leaders’ true allegiance, contrasting their claims with their conduct (John 8:40-44). “But” marks the sharp turn: although they boast of knowing God, their reaction shows the opposite. “Because” exposes causation—His very words trigger their hostility.
•John 3:19-20 reminds us that people “loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil.”
•Psalm 52:3 depicts the same heart: “You love evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking what is right.”
Truth shines; darkness resists.
I speak the truthJesus is not sharing an opinion; He is Truth incarnate.
•John 14:6: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
•John 18:37: “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth.”
•John 1:14, 17 couples “grace and truth” in the Word made flesh.
Every syllable He utters is perfectly reliable, exposing every lie. Rejecting His words means rejecting reality itself.
you do not believe Me!Their unbelief is willful, not intellectual.
•John 10:26: “You do not believe because you are not My sheep.”
•John 5:46-47: unbelief in Moses’ writings leads to unbelief in Christ.
•2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 warns that those who “refused the love of the truth” receive delusion.
Key points:
– Unbelief is moral at its core; truth threatens cherished sin.
– To side against Christ’s words is to align with the father of lies (John 8:44).
– Faith and truth rise or fall together; when truth speaks, belief should follow.
summaryJohn 8:45 shows that the pure truth of Jesus provokes hardened hearts. The conjunction “But because” links their rejection directly to His truthful speech. He, the embodiment of truth, exposes sin, and those clinging to darkness recoil. Unbelief is not from lack of evidence but from love of lies. The verse calls us to welcome the Light who always tells the truth, rather than resist Him.

And because I tell you the truth.--The pronoun is full of emphatic meaning. And I, as contrary to him, because 1 tell you the truth, as contrary to the lie which is his characteristic.
Ye believe me not--i.e., ye believe not what I say. It does not mean, Ye believe not on Me, but Ye accept not the truth which I speak. There is something startling in this sharp opposition of truth and unbelief. To speak the truth is commonly to command belief. The mind of man is so constituted that truth is the first object of its search. Here was perfect truth presented to men, and they refused to accept it, because it was the truth, and they were themselves children of him who was a liar.
Verse 45. - Then, turning to these children of the wicked one, Christ delivered a tremendous denunciation:
But because I say the truth - because I am the Organ, Utterance, and Incarnation of the truth -
ye believe me not. If he spake lies to them, they would greedily receive them. The very cause of their lack of credence is the utterance of truth. The "I" is emphatic, and set over against the "you" of the second clause. There is a tragic force about this charge almost unparalleled, implying the most wilful estrangement from God, a rejection of known truth because it was truth, a love of darkness because it was darkness, a moral obtuseness which answers to the terrible language, "Lest they should see with their eyes," etc.
