Samuel was offering the burnt offering as the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel.TheLORD thundered loudly  against the Philistines that day and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.

While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines approached to attack Israel. But that day the LORD thundered against the Philistines and threw them into panic, and they were defeated before Israel.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Jehovah thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Israel.
