This better hope refers to the new covenant established through Jesus Christ. Unlike the old covenant, which was based on adherence to the law, the new covenant offers a direct relationship with God through faith in Jesus. This hope is better because it is based on the finished work of Christ, who is both the high priest and the perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 9:11-14). The introduction of this hope fulfills the prophecy ofJeremiah 31:31-34, where God promises a new covenant written on the hearts of His people.

Under the old covenant, access to God was limited, with the high priest entering the Holy of Holies only once a year. In contrast, the new covenant allows believers to draw near to God with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). This nearness is made possible through Jesus, our mediator, who has opened the way to the Father (John 14:6). The concept of drawing near to God is central to the Christian faith, emphasizing a personal and intimate relationship with the Creator, made possible through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:18).

Hebrews 7:19 opens by stating, “for the law made nothing perfect.” The point is clear and literal:

• The Mosaic Law faithfully revealed God’s holy standards, yet it was never designed to bring fallen people to flawless completion. It exposed sin without curing it (Romans 3:20;Galatians 3:21).

• Animal sacrifices offered under the Law were “a reminder of sins every year” but could not “perfect the worshipers” (Hebrews 10:1–4).

• As a mirror shows dirt but cannot wash a face, the Law pointed to our need for a Savior (Galatians 3:24).

• Even high priests under the Law were themselves weak and mortal (Hebrews 7:23, 28).

God’s standard of perfection did not change; rather, the Law highlighted humanity’s inability to reach it on our own.

Into this insufficiency bursts promise: “and a better hope is introduced.” That hope is the person and priesthood of Jesus Christ.

• He is the “guarantee of a better covenant” (Hebrews 7:22) and the forerunner who has entered the heavenly sanctuary on our behalf (Hebrews 6:19-20).

• Unlike priests who served temporarily, Jesus “lives forever” and “is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him” (Hebrews 7:24-25).

• Through His once-for-all sacrifice, He provides the righteousness the Law could diagnose but never deliver (Romans 8:3-4;2 Corinthians 5:21).

• This hope is “living” because it rests on a risen Savior (1 Peter 1:3).

Everything the Law foreshadowed—cleansing, access, reconciliation—finds its fulfillment in Christ.

The verse concludes, “by which we draw near to God.” The result is intimate access:

• “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence” (Hebrews 4:16).

• Through Christ’s blood we have “boldness to enter the Most Holy Place” (Hebrews 10:19-22).

• Gentiles and Jews alike now “have access to the Father by one Spirit” (Ephesians 2:13, 18).

• Jesus Himself assures, “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Practical invitations:

– Worship freely, knowing the barrier of sin is removed.

– Pray with assurance that the Father hears.

– Walk daily in fellowship, not fear, because Christ’s priesthood never lapses.

Hebrews 7:19 contrasts the incomplete work of the Law with the complete work of Christ. The Law, though holy, could not perfect us; Jesus, the “better hope,” does. Through Him we now enjoy continual, confident nearness to God—a privilege the Law could only anticipate but never achieve.
