“I am the LORD.”
This declaration is a reaffirmation of God's identity and authority. The name "LORD" is translated from the Hebrew "YHWH," often vocalized as Yahweh, which is the personal name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). This name signifies God's eternal existence and unchanging nature. It is a reminder of God's covenant with the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. The statement "I am the LORD" serves as a powerful assertion of divine sovereignty and a call for trust in God's plan. It also foreshadows the deliverance and redemption that God will accomplish, which is a type of the ultimate redemption through Jesus Christ, who is also identified as the "I AM" inJohn 8:58.

The conversation continues right on the heels of Moses’ discouragement (Exodus 5:22-23). By speaking “also,” the Lord

• reminds Moses that He has been guiding every step since the burning bush (Exodus 3:4-10; 4:12),

• meets a faltering servant with personal attention, just as He once did with Abraham (Genesis 18:17), Jacob (Genesis 46:2), and Samuel (1 Samuel 3:10),

• reassures Israel that their cries have not been ignored (Psalm 34:4-7),

• asserts divine authority—this is direct, verbal revelation, not speculation (2 Peter 1:21),

• sets up the cascade of “I will” promises that follow (Exodus 6:6-8), showing the rescue plan is already in motion.

Everything God will do rests on who He is:

• Covenant identity—“LORD” (YHWH) is the same name revealed at the bush (Exodus 3:14-15) and sworn to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 15:7; 26:24; 28:13); therefore the covenant can’t fail (Psalm 105:8-11).

• Unchanging character—Because He is “I AM,” no power in Egypt can derail His purpose (Malachi 3:6;Hebrews 13:8).

• Sovereign authority—Pharaoh, the Nile, even history itself bow to Him (Exodus 9:16; 14:21;Psalm 46:10).

• Redeeming power—The exodus anticipates the greater deliverance accomplished by the One who later says, “Before Abraham was born, I am” (John 8:58;Galatians 4:4-5).

• Worship summons—Knowing Him as LORD calls us to trust and obey (Exodus 20:2;Deuteronomy 6:4-5;Revelation 15:3-4).

Exodus 6:2 meets a discouraged Moses with personal, authoritative reassurance. The same LORD who bound Himself to the patriarchs is speaking, unchanging in character and unstoppable in purpose. Because He is who He says He is, His promises of deliverance stand firm, inviting absolute trust and wholehearted worship.
