It must be eaten inside one house. This directive emphasizes the unity and communal aspect of the Passover meal. The Israelites were to gather as families or small groups within a single dwelling, symbolizing the unity of God's people. This practice also ensured the sanctity and sacredness of the meal, as it was a solemn observance of God's deliverance from Egypt. The house served as a place of protection, much like the blood on the doorposts protected the Israelites from the plague. This can be seen as a type of the church, where believers gather in unity under the protection of Christ's sacrifice.
You are not to take any of the meat outside the house,
This restriction underscores the sacredness of the Passover lamb, which was not to be profaned by being taken outside the designated place of consumption. It highlights the importance of keeping the holy separate from the common. The meat, representing the sacrifice, was to remain within the confines of the house, much like the spiritual nourishment and protection provided by Christ remains within the community of believers. This also prefigures the exclusivity of salvation through Christ, as the benefits of His sacrifice are for those who are within the covenant community.
and you may not break any of the bones.
This command is significant both in its immediate context and its prophetic implications. In the context of the Passover, it ensured that the lamb remained whole, symbolizing completeness and perfection. Prophetically, this points to Jesus Christ, the ultimate Passover Lamb, whose bones were not broken during His crucifixion, fulfilling the prophecy inPsalm 34:20 and referenced inJohn 19:36. This detail underscores the perfection and unblemished nature of Christ's sacrifice, aligning with the requirement for the Passover lamb to be without defect.

Eaten inside one house“It must be eaten inside one house.” (Exodus 12:46a)
• The Passover lamb stayed within the family dwelling so every member shared in the same act of faith and protection, echoing the earlier command that each household apply the blood to its doorposts (Exodus 12:3–7).
• The single-house requirement underscored unity. Just as the Israelites huddled behind one set of doors, believers today abide together in Christ, the true Passover Lamb (John 15:4;1 Corinthians 5:7).
• God’s deliverance was experienced corporately, never as a private or scattered ritual, foreshadowing the church gathering “in one body” under Jesus’ blood (Ephesians 2:13–16).
No meat taken outside“You are not to take any of the meat outside the house.” (Exodus 12:46b)
• Carrying the lamb’s flesh into the streets would place God’s holy provision in casual, profane spaces. Like the manna that was not to be hoarded (Exodus 16:19-20), the Passover meal was kept where God designated.
• Separation from Egypt’s culture was reinforced; the meal was not to mix with pagan surroundings (2 Corinthians 6:17).
• In Christ’s fulfillment, His sacrifice is cherished within the household of faith; we do not trivialize His body before an unbelieving world (1 Corinthians 11:27-29).
No broken bones“and you may not break any of the bones.” (Exodus 12:46c)
• The lamb had to remain whole, symbolizing perfection and foreshadowing the Messiah’s unbroken integrity (Psalm 34:20;John 19:33-36).
• Unbroken bones also preserved the lamb’s recognizable form, linking the eaten meat clearly to the sacrificed life, just as Christ’s unchanged character is evident in His resurrection body (Luke 24:39-40).
• God’s care for detail assures us that every promise, even down to a bone, is fulfilled (Matthew 5:17-18).
summaryExodus 12:46 lays out three simple but profound instructions: keep the Passover lamb inside the family home, do not disperse its meat, and leave its bones intact. Together they spotlight unity of God’s people, reverence for holy things, and the flawless foreshadowing of Jesus, whose unbroken body secures our deliverance.
(46)
Neither shall ye break a bone thereof.--In the case of all other victims, the limbs were to be separated from the body. Here the victim was to be roasted whole, and to remain whole, as a symbol of unity, and a type of Him through whom men are brought into unity with each other and with God. (See
John 19:33-36.)
Verse 46. -
In one house shall it be eaten. Compare the directions in vers. 3-10, which imply this, and see the comment on ver. 10. Neither shall ye break a bone of it. Kalisch thinks that the lamb was a symbol of the unity of the nation, and was therefore not to have any of its bones broken. This view may be a true one, without being exhaustive. It may have been to mark the unity of the Church in Christ that his bones were not broken, and in view especially of
that unity, that the type was made to correspond in this particular with the antitype. (See
John 19:33-36.)
