will see that you are called by the name of the LORD
Being "called by the name of the LORD" signifies a special relationship and identity with God. In ancient Near Eastern cultures, a name represented one's character and authority. Israel's identity was intrinsically linked to Yahweh, setting them apart from other nations. This calling is a precursor to the New Testament understanding of believers being called by the name of Christ (Acts 11:26), indicating a new identity and mission.

and they will stand in awe of you.
The awe mentioned here is a recognition of God's power and presence with Israel. This reverence is not merely fear but an acknowledgment of the divine favor and protection over Israel. Historically, when Israel followed God's commandments, they experienced victories and prosperity that were evident to surrounding nations, as seen in the reigns of David and Solomon. This awe can be seen as a type of the reverence that will be due to Christ, who embodies the fulfillment of God's promises and commands respect from all nations (Philippians 2:10-11).

Deuteronomy 28 stands within a covenant framework of blessings for obedience. The word “Then” places verse 10 after the prior promises (vv. 1-9) of abundant provision, victory, and holiness.

• Obedience leads to unmistakable favor (cf.Deuteronomy 28:1-2;Leviticus 26:3-13).

• The sequence shows that God’s blessings are purposeful, designed to display His glory beyond Israel (Psalm 67:1-2).

The scope is global. God never intended His work in Israel to remain hidden.

•Genesis 12:3 foretold that “all the families of the earth” would be blessed through Abraham.

•Psalm 98:2-3 declares, “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.”

•Isaiah 45:22 invites “all the ends of the earth” to turn to the LORD and be saved.

By placing Israel on a public stage, God sets up a living testimony for every nation.

The blessings are visible, not merely internal.

•Exodus 34:10 promises “all the people among whom you live will see the work of the LORD.”

•Matthew 5:16 echoes the principle: “let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works.”

Sight leads to acknowledgment; God’s acts in His people are His chosen billboard.

Identity is God-given. To be “called by” His name means publicly belonging to Him.

•2 Chronicles 7:14 speaks of “My people who are called by My name.”

•Jeremiah 14:9 pleads, “You, O LORD, are in our midst, and we are called by Your name.”

•1 Peter 2:9 applies this to believers: “a people for His own possession.”

God’s covenant marked Israel as His; obedience made that mark unmistakable.

Awe (or fearful respect) toward God’s people reflects awe toward God Himself.

•Deuteronomy 2:25: “This day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you upon the nations.”

•2 Chronicles 17:10: “The dread of the LORD was on all the kingdoms… so they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.”

•Acts 5:11-13 shows the early church inspiring similar respect.

The intent is not to exalt Israel in pride but to magnify God’s holiness and power through them.

Deuteronomy 28:10 promises that steadfast obedience will make God’s people a visible, undeniable testimony. Every nation will witness the LORD’s favor, recognize His ownership of His people, and respond with reverent awe. God blesses in order to reveal Himself, drawing the whole world’s attention to His glory displayed through those who bear His name.

And they shall be afraid of thee.--Comp.Jeremiah 33:9 : "And they shallfearand tremble forall the goodness and for all the prosperity,that I procure unto it" (Jerusalem).
