Salvation is a divine act, not based on human merit, reflecting God's initiative in rescuing humanity from sin. The "holy calling" suggests a life set apart for God's purposes, echoing 1 Peter 2:9, which describes believers as a chosen people. The concept of holiness is rooted in the Old Testament, where Israel was called to be a holy nation ( Exodus 19:6). This calling is not just individual but communal, involving the church as the body of Christ. not because of our works This phrase underscores the doctrine of grace, contrasting human effort with divine initiative.Ephesians 2:8-9 reinforces this by stating that salvation is a gift from God, not a result of works. This reflects the broader biblical narrative where human attempts to achieve righteousness fall short, as seen in the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). The rejection of works-based salvation was a central theme in the Reformation, emphasizing faith alone (sola fide). but by His own purpose God's purpose is central to the biblical narrative, from creation to redemption. This purpose is often mysterious and beyond human understanding, as seen inJob 42:2, where God's plans are described as unstoppable. The idea of divine purpose is also evident inRomans 8:28, where all things work together for good for those who love God. This purpose is not arbitrary but reflects God's character and ultimate plan for creation. and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus Grace is a foundational concept in Christian theology, representing unmerited favor. It is through Christ Jesus that this grace is made manifest, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies of a coming Messiah (Isaiah 53). The New Testament frequently highlights Jesus as the embodiment of grace, as seen inJohn 1:14, where He is described as full of grace and truth. This grace is transformative, enabling believers to live in accordance with God's will. before time began This phrase points to the eternal nature of God's plan, suggesting that salvation and calling were part of God's design before creation. This aligns withEphesians 1:4, which states that God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. The concept of God's eternal plan is a recurring theme in Scripture, emphasizing His sovereignty and foreknowledge. It assures believers of the certainty and security of their salvation, rooted in God's timeless purpose. Persons / Places / Events 1. 14.What does the Bible say about predetermination vs. predestination? What Does 2 Timothy 1:9 Mean He has saved usSalvation is a completed act initiated and accomplished by God. • The verb “saved” is past tense, anchoring our assurance in what God has already done through the death and resurrection of Jesus (John 19:30). •Titus 3:5 echoes the same truth: “He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy.” • From what are we saved? – The penalty of sin (Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”). – The power of darkness (Colossians 1:13: “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son”). – The coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10). • Because God saves, our confidence rests in Him, not in fluctuating feelings or efforts (John 10:28–29). and called us to a holy callingThe same God who rescues also summons us into a new way of life. • “Calling” is personal and powerful; it brings us from death to life (John 5:25). • Holiness means “set apart.” God’s purpose is not merely to forgive but to transform. –1 Thessalonians 4:7: “For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness.” –1 Peter 1:15–16: “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.” • A holy calling shapes our identity: saints, not sinners by label; children, not orphans (Ephesians 2:19). • It also shapes our daily choices—walking “worthy of the calling” (Ephesians 4:1). not because of our worksHuman merit plays no role in securing either salvation or calling. •Ephesians 2:8–9: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith … not by works, so that no one may boast.” •Romans 3:28 underscores, “A man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.” • Even our best deeds fall short (Isaiah 64:6). • This truth silences pride and fuels grateful obedience. but by His own purposeGod acts according to His sovereign, loving plan. •Romans 8:28–30 links purpose, calling, justification, and glorification in an unbreakable chain. •Ephesians 1:9 speaks of “the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ.” • Purpose underscores intentionality: we are not afterthoughts but part of a design stretching from eternity past to eternity future. • Because the purpose is His, it cannot fail (Job 42:2). and by the grace He granted us in Christ Jesus before time beganGrace is the fountain, Christ is the channel, and eternity is the backdrop. •Ephesians 1:4: “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence.” •1 Corinthians 2:7 calls this “God’s secret wisdom … destined for our glory before time began.” •Revelation 13:8 refers to Christ as “the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world,” revealing an eternal redemptive plan. • Practical implications: – Our salvation is secure; it pre-dates creation. – Grace is sheer gift—unearned, unchangeable, unstoppable. – Life in Christ is anchored in eternity yet lived faithfully in the present (2 Timothy 1:12). summary2 Timothy 1:9 sweeps from eternity past to present reality. God saved us through Christ, called us to live set-apart lives, and did so entirely by His grace and purpose, not by our efforts. Our assurance, identity, and daily walk rest on His unshakable, timeless plan fulfilled in Jesus. (9) Whohath saved us.--St. Paul now specifies the manner in which the power of God has been displayed towards us. This is an inclusive word, and comprehends all God's dealings with us in respect to our redemption. (See Notes on Titus 3:5.) Again, as so frequently in these Pastoral Epistles, is the First Person of the blessed Trinity referred to as the Saviour. Us.--Paul and Timothy, and all who believe on the name of the Lord Jesus, are included under "us." And called us with an holy calling.--This explains the means by which God was pleased to save St. Paul and Timothy. He called them. He--God the Father, to whom the act of calling is regularly ascribed (Galatians 1:6); and the calling is said to be "holy," because it is a summons to share in the blessed communion of Christ (1Corinthians 1:9). There is an inner as well as an outer calling; the "outer" comes through the preaching of the word, the inner by means of the voice of the Holy Ghost in the heart. Not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace.--We are told in the next clause that "the grace" was givenbefore the world began; therefore "our works" could have had nothing to do with the divine purpose which was resolved on by God. As Chrysostom observes, "No one counselling with Him, but of His own purpose, the purpose originating in His own goodness." Calvin pithily remarks, "If God chose us before the creation of the world, He could not have considered the question of our works, which could have had no existence at a period when we ourselves were not." "But according to" (in pursuance of) "His own purposes," with emphasis on "own"--that purpose which was prompted by nothing outward, but which arose solely out of the divine goodwill, or goodness, or love. (SeeEphesians 1:11.) The "grace" here is almost equivalent to the "mercy" ofTitus 3:5, "according to His mercy He saved us." . . . Verse 9. - Saved for hath saved, A.V.; a for an, A.V.; times eternal for the world began, A.V. Who saved us, and called us. The saving was in the gift of his only begotten Son to be our Saviour; the calling is the work of the Holy Spirit drawing individual souls to Christ to be saved by him. (For the power of God displayed in man's salvation, comp. Ephesians 1:19, 20.) With a holy calling (comp. Romans 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:2). Not according to our works (see Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:4-10). His own purpose and grace. If our calling were of works, it would not be by grace ( Romans 4:4, 5; Romans 11:6), but it is "according to the riches of his grace... according to his good pleasure which he purposed in himself" ( Ephesians 1:9, 11). Before times eternal ( πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων). The phrase seems to have the same general meaning as πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, "before the foundation of the world" ( Ephesians 1:4), where the general context is the same. The phrase itself occurs in Romans 16:25 ( χρόνοιςαἰωνίοις) and Titus 1:2, in which last place time is indicated posterior to the creation of men. In 1 Corinthians 2:7 we have simply πρὸτῶν αἰώνων, "before the worlds," where αἰών is equivalent to αἰωνίοι χρόνοι, and in Ephesians 3:11, πρόθεσιν τῶν αἰώνων, "the eternal purpose." In Luke 1:70 the phrase, ἀπαἰῶνος, is rendered "since the world began," and εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας ( Matthew 6:13), "forever." So frequently εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, "forever" ( Matthew 21:19; John 6:51, etc.), and εἰςτοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων ( Galatians 1:5; Ephesians 3:21; 1 Timothy 1:17, etc.), "forever and ever." The usage of the LXX. is very similar, where ἀπ αἰῶνος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα πρὸ τῶνἀιωνων ωἰὼν τῶν αἰώνων, etc., are frequent, as well as the adjective αἰώνιος. Putting all these passages together, and adverting to the classical meaning of αἰών, and its Latin equivalent, aevum, a "lifetime," we seem to arrive at the primary meaning of αἰών as being a "generation," and then any long period of time analogous to a man's lifetime. Hence χρόνοι αἰώνιοι would be times made up of successive generations, and πρὸ χρόνωναἰωνίων would mean at the very beginning of the times which consisted of human generations. Αἰὼν τῶν αἰώνων would be one great generation, consisting of all the successive generations of mankind. The whole duration of mankind in this present world would be in this sense one vast αἰών, to be followed by we know not what succeeding ones. Thus Ephesians 1:21, ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ is contrasted with ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι, the idea being that the world has its lifetime analogous to the lifetime of a man. The same period may also be considered as made up of several shorter αἰῶνες, the prediluvial, the patriarchal, the Mosaic, the Christian, and such like (see note to 1 Timothy 1:17).
