And who is the Rock except our God?
The metaphor of God as a "Rock" signifies strength, stability, and protection. In the ancient world, rocks and mountains were often seen as symbols of permanence and refuge. This imagery is used throughout the Psalms and other biblical texts to convey God's unchanging nature and His role as a protector and deliverer. For instance,Psalm 18:2 states, "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer." The term "Rock" also points to God's reliability and faithfulness, qualities that are foundational to the believer's trust in Him. In the New Testament, this imagery is expanded to include Christ as the spiritual Rock, as seen in1 Corinthians 10:4, where Paul refers to Christ as the spiritual rock that accompanied the Israelites. This connection highlights the continuity of God's redemptive work from the Old Testament to the New Testament, with Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises.

“For who is God besides the LORD?” (2 Samuel 22:32a)

David’s opening question is rhetorical—its answer is a resounding “No one.”

• The LORD stands alone as the only true God. Moses declared the same inDeuteronomy 4:35, “The LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.” Elijah echoed it on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:39). Isaiah repeated it: “I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from Me there is no God” (Isaiah 45:5).

• By asking, David presses us to compare every so-called deity, philosophy, or human strength with the living LORD—and discover that all rivals collapse.Jeremiah 10:10 reminds us, “The LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.”

• This exclusivity is good news. Because God alone is God, His promises are unbreakable (Numbers 23:19). His salvation is certain (Isaiah 43:11). His covenant love cannot be thwarted (Lamentations 3:22-23).

• The New Testament carries the same note: “There is no God but one” (1 Corinthians 8:4) and “one God and Father of all” (Ephesians 4:6). The LORD who delivered David is the same God who sent His Son for us (John 3:16).

The verse invites wholehearted confidence. If there is literally no other God, trusting Him fully is the only logical response.

“And who is the Rock except our God?” (2 Samuel 22:32b)

“Rock” is David’s favorite metaphor for the LORD.

• Unshakable stability.Deuteronomy 32:4 calls Him “the Rock; His work is perfect.” Storms of life may pound us, but God does not move (Psalm 62:2).

• Refuge and protection. David had hid among Judean crags; now he sings, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer” (Psalm 18:2). As rocks sheltered him physically, God sheltered him spiritually (Psalm 91:1-2).

• Foundation for living. Jesus echoes the imagery: the wise man builds on rock, and the house stands (Matthew 7:24-25). Our lives find the same security when anchored in God’s character and Word.

• Source of life. Paul points out that Israel drank “from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). The Rock provides both earthly deliverance and eternal salvation.

By pairing “God” with “Rock,” David testifies that the LORD is not only uniquely divine but also personally dependable—an immovable friend in every conflict.

2 Samuel 22:32 sweeps away every rival claim to deity and every illusion of self-sufficiency. There is one God, the LORD, and He alone is the solid Rock able to save, steady, and sustain His people. Knowing this, we can rest secure, worship wholeheartedly, and face every trial with unshakeable confidence in Him.

"For who is God, save Jehovah?
And who is a rock, save our God?
God is my strong Fortress,
And he guideth the perfect in his way.
He maketh my feet like the hinds,
And upon my high places he cloth set me."God; Hebrew,El; the Mighty One, used several times in this psalm. In the second clause the word isElohim, the ordinary name of God. The psalmist's question is a strong assertion that Jehovah alone is God, and that he alone is a Rock of safety for his people.He guideth, etc. InPsalm 18:32 "He maketh my way perfect," like his own. The phrase here is probably that which David wrote, as being less usual, and it signifies that God will direct the upright man in his good way.Hinds. David's feet are swift as hinds, an animal famous for its speed and sureness of foot.My high places. The tops of the mountains are the favourite resort of the antelope (2 Samuel 1:18); and so with David, the possession of such rocky citadels as Bozez and Seneh (1 Samuel 14:4) made him master of the whole country.
