What Does 2 Peter 1:12 Mean

Therefore

Peter’s “Therefore” pushes us back to the foundation he just laid (2 Peter 1:5-11). Because

• God’s “divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness” (v3),

• we are “partakers of the divine nature” (v4), and

• practicing the seven virtues—faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love—keeps us “from being ineffective or unfruitful” (vv5-8),

he now draws a necessary conclusion. This echoes Paul’s pattern (“Therefore… present your bodies” –Romans 12:1) and reminds us that doctrine always calls for action.

I will always remind you

Peter commits to unceasing repetition. Shepherds don’t fear saying the same life-saving truth again and again.

• “To write the same things to you is no trouble for me and is a safeguard for you” (Philippians 3:1).

• “Remind them of these things” (2 Timothy 2:14).

Repetition guards minds that can drift and puts truth on the tip of the tongue when temptation hits.

Of these things

“These things” points to the gospel-grounded qualities of verses 5-7 and the promised “rich welcome into the eternal kingdom” (v11). In other words, Peter is circling back to

1. the priceless gift of saving knowledge of Christ,

2. the daily pursuit of Christ-likeness, and

3. the sure hope of glory.

Keeping these three braided together keeps the believer balanced—never legalistic, never lazy, always looking forward (Colossians 3:1-4).

Even though you know them

Knowledge doesn’t cancel the need for reminders. Spiritual amnesia is real.

• “I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you have it” (1 John 2:21).

• Israel “soon forgot His works” (Psalm 106:13), proving the danger of relying on yesterday’s memory.

Hearing again what we already know sharpens conviction and keeps truth lively.

And are established in the truth you now have

“To be established” speaks of firmness and stability—believers already stand on solid footing. Still, that footing is maintained by continual exposure to the same truth.

• “Continue to walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught” (Colossians 2:6-7).

• God Himself “will… strengthen you, and establish you” (1 Peter 5:10).

Peter’s letter is one of God’s tools to keep that promise active. No believer graduates from the basics; they are the concrete God uses to keep us unshakable amid false teaching (2 Peter 2).

summary

2 Peter 1:12 shows an apostle lovingly pledging to keep the essentials front and center. Because believers have received priceless promises and begun to live them out, Peter refuses to let those truths fade. (12-15) Transition from the exhortation just concluded to the argument that follows, closely and naturally connected with both.

(12)I will not be negligent.--According to the right reading,I shall be sure to; because on your doing these things depends your entrance into Christ's kingdom.

Though ye know them.--We find the same affectionate delicacy inRomans 15:14-15 (see Notes there);1John 2:21;Jude 1:5.

And be established in the present truth.--Comp. "This is the true grace of God wherein ye stand" (1Peter 5:12), to which it is not impossible that this verse refers; the "always" here looks like a half apology for what his readers might think needless repetition. "The present truth" is an instance of a translation being misleading through its very literalness. The three Greek words are exactly represented, but the sense is misrepresented. The meaning is, not the truth that we are now discussing, the truth before us, but the truth of the gospel that is come unto you (Colossians 1:5-6), and is present with you: "the faith once for all delivered unto the saints" (Jude 1:3). . . .

Verse 12. -Wherefore I will net be negligent to put you alwaysin remembrance of these things; rather, as in the Revised Version,wherefore I shall be ready. This reading (μελλήσω) is better supported than that of the T.R. (οὐκ ὀμελήσω). (For this use ofμέλλειν with the infinitive almost as a periphrasis for the future, compare, in the Greek,Matthew 24:6.) The apostle will take every opportunity of reminding his readers of the truths and duties which he has been describing, and that because faith in those truths and the practice of those duties is the only way to Christ's eternal kingdom.Though ye know them, and be established in the present truth; better, as in the Revised Version,and are established in the truth which is with you. These words seem to imply that St. Peter knew something, through Silvanus (see1 Peter 5:12), of those to whom he was writing; they were not ignorant of the gospel; now they had read his First Epistle, and earlier they had heard the preaching of St. Paul or his companions (comp.Romans 1:13). (For the word rendered "established" (ἐστηριγμένους), comp.1 Peter 5:10;2 Peter 3:16, 17.) St. Peter seems to have kept ever in his thoughts the solemn charge of the Saviour, "When thou art converted, strengthen (στήριξον) thy brethren" (Luke 22:32). For "the truth which is with you" (παρούση), comp.Colossians 1:6.
