Paul asserts his honesty and integrity by appealing to God's omniscience. This is significant in the context of defending his apostleship and the truth of his message against false apostles, as seen earlier in the chapter. The appeal to God's knowledge is a solemn declaration, as God is the ultimate judge of truth and falsehood. This assurance of truthfulness is echoed in other Pauline writings, such asGalatians 1:20, where Paul similarly calls upon God as his witness. This phrase highlights the seriousness with which Paul regards his mission and the divine accountability he acknowledges.

Paul opens by anchoring his words in the character of God.

• Calling Him “God and Father” reminds us that the One who judges truth is both sovereign Creator and compassionate Parent (Romans 8:15;James 1:17).

• By invoking God in this way, Paul reinforces that every claim he makes is made under the watchful eye of the One “with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow” (James 1:17).

• The phrase also recalls Jesus’ own language after the resurrection: “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God” (John 20:17). It underscores shared family identity for all who believe.

Paul immediately identifies which “God and Father” he means—“of the Lord Jesus.”

• “Lord” highlights Christ’s absolute authority (Philippians 2:9-11).

Every phrase of2 Corinthians 11:31 stacks unshakable truths: the personal, sovereign Father; His union with the Lord Jesus; His eternal praiseworthiness; and His all-knowing witness to human integrity. Paul’s brief oath invites us to anchor our words and lives in the same holy reality—speaking and serving with confidence that the God we worship forever sees and affirms the truth.

Which is blessed for evermore.--The Greek has no conjunction, but its force is best given either bywhich is, and is blessed for evermore, or, by an emphasis of punctuation and the insertion of a verb,which is: blessed is He for evermore. The Greek participle is not a single predicate of blessedness, such as the English expresses, but is that constantly used in the LXX. version as the equivalent of the Hebrew name for Jehovah: "He that is," the "I AM" ofExodus 3:13-14;Jeremiah 14:13; and in a later and probably contemporary work, not translated from the Hebrew, inWisdom Of Solomon 13:1 ("they could not . . . know Him that is"). So Philo, in like manner, speaks of "He that is" as a received name of God. (See also Notes onJohn 8:58-59;Romans 9:5.) . . .

(1) because even the very little which we do know shows us that the tale would have been "passing strange;" and
