In the Greco-Roman world, wealth was often seen as a sign of divine favor, yet the New Testament frequently warns against the spiritual dangers of riches ( Matthew 19:23-24). The "present age" contrasts with the eternal perspective Christians are called to adopt, emphasizing the temporary nature of earthly wealth ( James 5:1-3). not to be conceited Pride is a common temptation for those with wealth, as it can lead to a false sense of self-sufficiency and superiority.Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride precedes destruction. The Bible consistently teaches humility, as seen inPhilippians 2:3-4, where believers are encouraged to value others above themselves. and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth Wealth is described as uncertain because it can be lost or devalued, as illustrated in the parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:16-21). The Bible teaches that true security comes from God, not material possessions (Proverbs 11:28). This reflects the transient nature of earthly riches and the need for a foundation built on faith. but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy This phrase emphasizes God's role as the ultimate provider.James 1:17 states that every good and perfect gift is from above. The enjoyment of God's provisions is encouraged, but with gratitude and stewardship, recognizing that all blessings are from Him (1 Chronicles 29:14). This aligns with the biblical theme of God’s generosity and care for His creation. Persons / Places / Events 1. PaulThe apostle who authored the letter to Timothy, providing guidance and instruction for church leadership and Christian living. 2. TimothyA young pastor and protégé of Paul, stationed in Ephesus, tasked with leading and instructing the church. 3. The RichIndividuals in the Ephesian church who possess material wealth and are being specifically addressed in this passage. 4. EphesusThe city where Timothy was ministering, known for its wealth and commerce, which may have influenced the church's attitudes toward riches. Teaching Points Avoiding ConceitWealth can lead to pride and self-reliance. Christians are called to humility, recognizing that all blessings come from God. The Uncertainty of WealthMaterial wealth is temporary and unreliable. Believers should place their trust in God, who is constant and faithful. God as ProviderGod provides for our needs and even our enjoyment. Recognizing His provision fosters gratitude and contentment. Stewardship and GenerosityWith wealth comes responsibility. Christians are encouraged to use their resources to bless others and further God's kingdom. Eternal PerspectiveFocusing on eternal values rather than temporary riches aligns our hearts with God's purposes and leads to true fulfillment. Not to be conceitedWealth can inflate the ego. Paul warns against pride that blinds us to dependence on God. •Proverbs 18:11 pictures a rich man imagining his riches as “a high wall.” • Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall illustrates conceit birthed by prosperity (Daniel 4:30-32). • Genuine greatness is found in humility (Matthew 23:11-12). And not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealthMoney promises security, yet Scripture calls it “uncertainty.” •Proverbs 23:4-5 shows riches sprouting wings and flying away. • Jesus describes moth, rust, and thieves targeting earthly treasure (Matthew 6:19). • The rich fool’s sudden death (Luke 12:20) underscores how fragile wealth is. Therefore, hope anchored in money is misplaced and unstable. But in GodThe alternative is clear: transfer trust from assets to the Almighty. • “Trust in the LORD with all your heart” (Proverbs 3:5-6) applies to finances too. •Jeremiah 17:7-8 contrasts the cursed man who trusts flesh with the blessed one who trusts God. •Hebrews 13:5 ties contentment to God’s promise, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Who richly provides all things for us to enjoyGod is not stingy; He “richly provides all things for us to enjoy.” • Every good and perfect gift descends from the Father (James 1:17). • Creation overflows with provisions demonstrating His generosity (Psalm 104:27-28). • Jesus assures that the Father knows our needs and adds “all these things” when we seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:31-33). Enjoyment, then, is permitted—so long as gratitude and stewardship govern it (1 Corinthians 10:31). summary1 Timothy 6:17 reorients the wealthy believer’s heart. Prosperity is a stewardship, not a pedestal; pride must yield to humility. Security rests not in fluctuating bank balances but in the unchanging God who supplies abundantly. When riches are held with open hands and hope is fixed on the Provider, believers can both enjoy God’s gifts and invest them for eternal impact. (17) Charge them that are rich.--Paul had traced up the error of the false teachers--against whose work and influence he had so earnestly warned Timothy--to covetousness, to an unholy love of money; he then spoke of this unhappy covetousness--this greed of gain, this wish to be rich--as the root of every evil. From this fatal snare he warned the "man of God" to flee, bidding him take courage in the high service to which he was dedicated, and to be fearless of all consequences, for he served the King of kings. But in the congregations of Ephesus there were many, owing to birth or to other circumstances, already rich and powerful, already in the possession of gold and rank, in varied degrees. Before closing the letter to the chief pastor, Timothy, he must add a word of encouragement and also of special warning to these. Above all things he would have no mistake as to his meaning: the wish to be rich was a sure root of error and of evil, but the being rich was a very different thing; this class was surrounded, indeed, with special perils, but still, even " as rich" they might serve God faithfully. So in his charge to them he commands them not to strip themselves of their wealth, but to use it wisely, generously. In this world.--The Greek word rendered "world" signifies, in its literal sense, age, and includes the period which closes with the second coming of the Lord. Now, as St; Paul had just made a reference to the probable speedy coming of the Lord in judgment in Timothy's lifetime, the words "the rich in this world" have a special signification. Very fleeting indeed will be those riches of which their possessors were so foolishly proud [be not high-minded, St. Paul urges]; these riches were a possession always terminable with life--possibly, let them bear in mind, much sooner. Nor trust in uncertain riches.--The literal translation of the Greek here is more forcible--"nor trust in the uncertainty of riches." Uncertainty--for (1) the very duration of life, even for a day, is uncertain; and (2) the numberless accidents of life--in war, for instance, and commerce--are perpetually reminding us of the shifting nature of these earthly possessions. But in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.--The Greek word rendered "living" does not occur in the more ancient authorities. Its removal from the text in nowise alters the sense of the passage. The rich should set their affections and place their trust, not in these uncertain riches, but in God, the bestower of them, who wills, too, that His creatures should find pleasure in these His gifts--given to us to enjoy. This is another of the many sayings of the old man St. Paul, in which he urges on the people of God, that their kind Master in heaven not only allows men reasonable pleasures and gratifications, but even Himself abundantly provides such for them. Verse 17. - This present for this, A.V.; have their hope set on the uncertainty of for trust in uncertain, A.V.; onGod for in the living God, A.V. and T.R. Charge ( παράγγελλε); as in 1 Timothy 1:3; 1 Timothy 4:11; 1 Timothy 5:7; and in ver. 13, and elsewhere frequently. Rich in this present world. Had St. Paul in his mind the parable of Dives and Lazarus (comp. Luke 16:19, 25)? That they be not high-minded ( μὴ ὑψηλοφρονεῖν); elsewhere only in Romans 11:20. The words compounded with ὑψηλός have mostly a bad sense - "haughtiness," "boastfulness," and the like. The uncertainty ( ἀδηλότητι); here only in the New Testament, but used in the same sense in Polybius (see ἄδηλος in 1 Corinthians 14:8; and ἀδήλως in 1 Corinthians 9:6). The A.V., though less literal, expresses the sense much better than the R.V., which is hardly good English. Who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; for enjoyment. The gifts are God's. Trust, therefore, in the Giver, not in the gift. The gift is uncertain; the Giver liveth forever. (For the sentiment that God is the Giver of all good, comp. James 1:17; Psalm 104:28; Psalm 145:16, etc.)
