Windows NT Embedded 4.0 (often shortened toNTe, codenamedImpala)[1] is a componentized version ofWindows NT Workstation 4.0 intended for use in embedded units, which was available to original equipment manufacturers on 9 August 1999[2].
Unlike any other installation of Windows, which would be installed by booting into its installation media and then simply setting it up, Windows NT Embedded 4.0 is instead built and deployed with a tool called Target Designer, which is bundled alongside Component Designer into Windows NT Embedded 4.0's installation media. Although Component Designer can be used for certain purposes, only Target Designer is needed for a regular Windows NT Embedded 4.0 image.
There are three configurations bundled by default in Target Designer. The utility may also be used to create custom configurations which define different features such as drivers, shell settings, applications included, etc.
