Iceland held the lead for much of the game, and early in the fourth quarter they were up 63-56. Italy responded with a 14-3 run to take a 70-66 advantage, looking poised to steal the game. However,Elvar Fridriksson stepped up for Iceland in the clutch. With under a minute remaining, he scored a two-pointer while drawing a foul to put Iceland ahead 77-76. He then added two free throws to make it 79-76. Italy’s final attempt to retake the lead fell short, and Iceland secured the rebound. Fridriksson iced the game with another pair of free throws, sealing an 81-76 upset. In other Group D action, Lithuania is currently battling for a win against Great Britain in London. In the next stage of qualifying, the teams from this group will merge with Group C, which features Serbia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Switzerland.
