A Vlach duke ruling Transylvania around 895,Gelou, is mentioned alongsideGlad andMenumorut in the late 12th centuryGesta Hungarorum (the reliability of which is debated); a 1247 royal charter, known as theDiploma of the Joannites, mentions four Romaniankeneziates (or polities) inMuntenia andOltenia. The double election ofAlexandru Ioan Cuza inMoldavia andWallachia (respectively, 5 and 24 January 1859). Independence proclaimed on 9 May 1877, internationally recognised in 1878. Romania in the interwar period, following theproclamation of the union in 1918 includingBessarabia,Bukovina,Transylvania, parts ofBanat,Crișana andMaramureș, established after theParis Peace Conference closingWorld War I in 1920. Monarchy was abolished on 30 December 1947 upon the proclamation of thePeople's Republic and was changed with thenew constitution upon its adoption on 21 August 1965 as the Socialist Republic. The Communist regimefell on 22 December 1989, the new democratic government was installed on 20 May 1990 and the new post-communistconstitution was adopted on 21 November 1991.
