Biography
Zack Fields lives inAnchorage, Alaska. Fields earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Virginia. His professional experience includes working as an outdoors writer and as a legislative/policy staffer at the local, state, and federal levels. Fields was affiliated with Anchorage Youth Court, the Anchorage NAACP, and Knik Canoers and Kayakers.[1]

1) Fight crime with expanded law enforcement capacity, more substance misuse treatment capacity, and better re-entry programs.2) Provide adequate funding and support for excellent public schools.3) Balance the budget with new revenue, which is necessary to accomplish goals 1) and 2).
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
1) Improved early childhood care to reduce maternal and infant mortality, reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)/trauma, and give kids a chance to reach their fully potential.2) Raise wages and improve economic security and opportunity for working families.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for giving working families a chance to earn a living wage and retire with security and dignity.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
"Resistance, Rebellion, and Death" (among Camus' other works) discusses an individual's responsibility to fight for human rights, even against daunting odds. "Master of the Senate" and Caro's other volumes in his LBJ biographies illustrate how one must be strategic to accomplish good, and that simply being right is not sufficient to effect change.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Capacity for critical analysis.Strong moral compass.Persistence.Good work ethic.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have a long record of working across party lines, in partnership with advocacy groups, and using media to advance policy reforms. I don't care about getting credit, just want results.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Balance the budget while sustaining excellent public schools and building a much more effective public safety system.
