The 2014Wyoming judicial elections consisted solely of retention elections. In these elections, judges do not compete against another candidate, but voters are given a "yes" or "no" choice whether to keep the justice in office for another term. Candidates must win a majority of the vote for retention. In 2014, all of the judges up for retention were successful.[1]

All judges inWyoming are chosen using aassisted appointment method of judicial selection. The state’s system does not require judges to compete against other candidates for re-election, but voters are allowed to vote either "yes" or "no" to say whether a judge may serve another term on the court. Judges do not serve a full term after their initial appointment. They must face aretention election after serving at least one year on the bench. Five judges were appointed from 2012 to 2014 and thus appeared on the ballot for a retention vote for the first time, including:Steven K. Sharpe,Richard Lavery,William Edelman,Thomas W. Rumpke andDan Forgey.

After their first retention election, a judge must run in aretention election during the year their term expires, to continue serving on the court. Judges filing to renew their terms have a longer window to file for candidacy than those running for non-judicial offices. The filing window for most candidates in 2014 was between May 15 and May 30, but the deadline for judges to file was not until August 2.[3] A preliminary list of candidates was made available on theWyoming Secretary of State’s website.[4] Twenty-one judges filed for retention as of May 2014, including JusticeJames Burke of theWyoming Supreme Court, who joined the court in 2005. Ninedistrict court judges and elevencircuit court judges filed for retention as well.
