William Hastie
William Henry Hastie (1904-1976) was afederal judge for theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.
Hastie was nominated by PresidentHarry Truman on October 21, 1949, to a new seat created by 63 Stat. 493; he was nominated on January 5, 1950, confirmed by the Senate on July 19, 1950, and received commission onJuly 22nd. He served aschief judge from 1968 until he assumedsenior status onMay 31, 1971. He served until his death onApril 14, 1976.[1]
Hastie became the first African American to serve the federal judiciary when he was appointed in 1950.[2]
