William Douglas
William Orville Douglas (1898-1980) was an Associate Justice on theSupreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1939 after a nomination from PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt. OnNovember 12, 1975, Douglas assumedsenior status and continued to serve in this capacity until his death onJanuary 19, 1980. Prior to joining the court, Douglas was the chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.[1]
Douglas was one of nine justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Roosevelt. He served duringThe Hughes Court,The Stone Court,The Vinson Court,The Warren Court andThe Burger Court.[2]
Education
Douglas received his undergraduate degree from Whitman College in 1920 and hisLL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1925.[1]

Douglas was nominated by PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt on March 20, 1939 to replace JusticeLouis Brandeis. He was confirmed by the Senate on April 4th, and received commission onApril 15, 1939. OnNovember 12, 1975, Douglas assumedsenior status and continued to serve in this capacity until his death onJanuary 19, 1980.[1] He was succeeded to this post by JusticeJohn Paul Stevens.
