Wiley Blount Rutledge (1894-1949) was an Associate Justice on theSupreme Court of the United States. He joined the Supreme Court in 1943 after a nomination from PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt. Rutledge served on the Supreme Court until his death on September 10, 1949. Prior to joining the court, he was serving as a judge for theUnited States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.^[1]

Rutledge was one of nine justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Roosevelt. He served duringThe Stone Court andThe Vinson Court.^[2]

Education

Rutledge received an undergraduate degree from University of Wisconsin in 1914 and aLL.B. from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1922.^[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Supreme Court

Rutledge was nominated to the Supreme Court by PresidentFranklin Roosevelt on January 11, 1943, to replace JusticeJames Byrnes. He was confirmed by the Senate on February 8, 1943, and received commission onFebruary 11, 1943. Rutledge served until his death onSeptember 10, 1949.^[1] He was succeeded to this post by JusticeSherman Minton.

District of Columbia Circuit

Rutledge was nominated to theUnited States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by PresidentFranklin Roosevelt on March 21, 1939, to a seat created by 52 Stat. 584. He was confirmed by the Senate on April 4, 1939, and received commission onMay 2nd. Rutledge served on this court untilFebruary 14, 1943.^[1] He was succeeded to this post byThurman Arnold.
