Walter Herbert Rice is afederal judge onsenior status with theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter.[1]

Early life and education

A native ofPittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rice graduated from Northwestern University with his bachelor's degree in 1958. Rice earned both hisJ.D. from the Columbia University School of Law and his M.B.A. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business Administration in 1962. Rice also has two honorary degrees: a doctor of laws from the University of Dayton and a doctor of humane letters from Wright State University.[1][2]

Judicial career

Southern District of Ohio

Rice was nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter on April 14, 1980, to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio vacated byTimothy Hogan. He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on May 21, 1980, and he received his commission onMay 23, 1980. He served aschief judge of the court from 1996 to 2003. Rice elected to takesenior status beginning onNovember 30, 2004. He was succeeded in this position by JudgeMichael Barrett.[2]
