Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Vermont Agency of Education reads:[1]
| “ | The Agency of Education implements state and federal laws, policies, and regulations to ensure all Vermont learners have equitable access to high-quality learning opportunities. The Agency accomplishes this mission through the provision of its leadership, support, and oversight of Vermont’s public education system.[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The current Vermont Secretary of Education isZoie Saunders (nonpartisan). Saunders assumed office in 2024.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education consists of 10 members including nine voting members and one non-voting member. Each member is appointed by theGovernor and approved by theVermont State Senate. The non-voting member as well as one voting member are students at Vermont high schools. The non-voting member is a high school junior who moves into a voting position the following year. High school members serve two-year terms and lay members serve six-year terms. The board's responsibilities include oversight of education fund disbursement, adult education programs and K-12 performance standards.[3]
