TheUtah Superintendent of Public Instruction is an appointed position in theUtah state government. Thesuperintendent is appointed by the Utah State Board of Education and is charged with administering all programs assigned to the board. The superintendent, together with thegovernor,attorney general, andauditor comprise the State Board of Reform School Commissioners.

The office of superintendent is established inArticle X, Section 3 of thestate Constitution.
Article X, Section 3:
| The State Board of Education shall appoint a State Superintendent of Public Instruction who shall be the executive officer of the board.[1] |
Qualifications
Qualifications for the office of superintendent are provided by Utah statute.
UnderChapter 1, Section 301:
| The board shall appoint the state superintendent on the basis of outstanding professional qualifications.[2] |
Appointments
Although the superintendent was an elected position underArticle VII, Section 1 in the originalstate Constitution, later amendments toArticle X provided for the State Board of Education to appoint the superintendent.
