History

The Department of Commerce and Labor was formed based on the Commerce Clause in theU.S. Constitution. The clause states that Congress has the power "to regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes."[1] The Department of Labor was formed as an independent department in 1913, leaving the Department of Commerce as a separate entity.[2]
