Timothy M. Cain
Timothy Martin Cain is thechief judge on theUnited States District Court for the District of South Carolina. He joined the court in 2011 after a nomination from PresidentBarack Obama. In 2024, Cain became the chief judge of the court.[1]
Early life and education
A native ofSeneca, South Carolina, Cain earned his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1983 and hisJ.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1986.[1]

OnFebruary 16, 2011, PresidentBarack Obama nominated Cain to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the District of South Carolina vacated byPatrick Duffy. TheAmerican Bar Association rated CainUnanimously Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Cain's nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on May 4, 2011, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen.Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on May 26, 2011. Cain was confirmed on a recorded 99-0 vote of theU.S. Senate on September 20, 2011, and he received his commission on September 26, 2011.[1][2][3] Cain became chief judge of the court in 2024.[1]
