Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Texas Education Agency reads:[1]

The Texas Education Agency will improve outcomes for all public school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.[2]

Superintendent

The current Texas Commissioner of Education isMike Morath (nonpartisan). Morath assumed office in 2016.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education consists of 15 members elected by geographic district to two or four-year terms. TheGovernor, with the advice and consent of theTexas State Senate, selects one member to serve as chairperson for a two-year term. The Commissioner of Education serves as the board's executive officer and works with the board in developing curriculum, public and charter school policies and continuing education programs.[3]
