2016

The following issues were listed on Stern's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Growing an Economy for the Middle Class: Steve knows that Middle Class families are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet here on Long Island. That’s why he kept his promise and helped deliver 10 straight budgets with NO increase county general fund property taxes. Our young people need good jobs and affordable workforce housing, our seniors need relief from taxes and high utility costs, reliable transportation and assistance with caregiving, so that they can stay in the homes they love in the communities that they helped build.
  • Protecting Social Security and Medicare: Steve will fight to protect Social Security and Medicare and will stand up to those in Congress who would undermine Medicare’s promise with a radical Tea Party budget. Steve opposes any attempt to privatize and put Social Security at risk and dangerous proposals like raising the retirement age. As an elder law and special needs attorney, Steve has spent his entire professional career fighting for those who desperately want to maintain their dignity and independence. He’ll do the same as our Congressman.
  • Protecting the Environment: Long Island faces unique environmental challenges. As an Island, we are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Our sole-source aquifer provides all of our drinking water. Steve has been a leader in protecting our water quality. He authored the legislation establishing the “Shed the Meds” Pharmaceutical Collection program to keep dangerous substances out of our water supply, created tougher penalties for illegal dumping and supported groundbreaking renewable energy initiatives.
  • Investing in Education: As a graduate of our local public schools, Steve knows how fortunate we are to have some of the best public schools in the country. As father of two public school children, Steve understands that we must invest in our schools so our children can compete in the global economy of the future. That means modernizing our schools with the latest technology while still focusing on the fundamentals of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
  • Supporting Womens' Health and Equal Rights: Steve is committed to protecting women’s access to reproductive health care and a woman’s right to choose. Women’s health care has been under attack by Republicans in Congress, who even sought to shut down the government over funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides critically needed services, including cancer screenings and contraception to both men and women.[10]

Scorecards

See also:State legislative scorecards andState legislative scorecards in New York

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
