Astate senate is the upper deliberative body, or chamber, in states with abicamerallegislature. A state senate normally has fewer members — usually one-half to one-third as many members — than astate assembly orstate house of representatives.
A state senator is a member of a state's Senate. In 1964, theSupreme Court of the United States ruled thatstate legislatures must apportion seats in both houses according to population.[1]
