Forty-three states heldstate executive official elections on November 4, 2014.

Heading into 2014, eight states were not scheduled to hold executive official elections:Kentucky,Mississippi,New Jersey,North Carolina,Utah,Virginia,Washington andWest Virginia. Utah was forced to schedule aspecial election forattorney general, following the resignation ofJohn Swallow in December 2013.Sean Reyes (R)won the special election for the remaining two years of Swallow's elected term.

In the 43 states that held elections in 2014, atotal of 225 state executive officials were elected. That is more than double the number of positions that were elected in2012, when 94 positions were elected.

DemocraticGovernor of Rhode IslandLincoln Chafee, the former Republican and sole sitting Independent governor until May 2013, was expected to seek re-election on the Democratic ticket in2014, but announced on September 4, 2013 that he would not seek a second term.[1][2]

What happened to the governors elected in the 2010 tea party wave?

Twelve Republican challengers replaced Democratic governors during the 2010 midterm elections. All of these first-term governors were seeking re-election in 2014 with hopes of continuing the conservative wave that swept them into office four years earlier. Attorneys general in 27 states filed lawsuits in 2010 and 2011 challenging the constitutionality of theAffordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Two-thirds (18) of those attorney general seats were up for election in 2014. The following table tracks partisan control over these attorney general offices before and after the 2014 election.[7]
