Stanley Matthews (1824-1889) was an Associate Justice on theSupreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1881 after a nomination from PresidentJames Garfield. Matthews served the Supreme Court until his death onMarch 22, 1889. Prior to joining the court, he was a United States Senator from Ohio.[1]

Matthews was one of five justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Garfield, though only one was confirmed. He served duringThe Waite Court andThe Fuller Court.[2]

Education

Matthews received an undergraduate degree from Kenyon College in 1840. He received his legal education byreading law.[1]

Matthews was nominated by PresidentJames Garfield on March 14, 1881, to fill the vacancy left by JusticeNoah Haynes Swayne. He was confirmed by the Senate onMay 12, 1881, and received commission that same day. He served until his death onMarch 22, 1889.[1] He was succeeded to this post by JusticeDavid Josiah Brewer.
