Term limits
In 1992, South Dakota voters approvedBallot Issue A in 1992, aninitiated constitutional amendment. This amendment, which imposed term limits in the stateHouse of Representatives, became part ofSection 6 of Article III of theSouth Dakota Constitution and limited the amount of time that aSouth Dakota Representative can stay in office to no more than four consecutive 2-year terms.
TheSouth Dakota State Legislature has tried on more than one occasion, each time unsuccessfully, to persuade the state's voters to repeal term limits. As of 2010, the most recent such failed attempt was whenAmendment J lost in 2008 75 percent to 25 percent.
Seven of South Dakota's 70 state representatives, or 10 percent, were termed out in 2012. Of seven term-limited representatives, two wereDemocratic and five wereRepublican.
In addition to the seven South Dakota state representatives who left office because of term limits,three South Dakota state senators were also termed-out.
