Dick attended the University of Texas, graduatingcum laude with a B.S. in 1981. She went on to earn herJ.D. in 1988 from the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center.[4]

OnApril 25, 2012, PresidentBarack Obama nominated Shelly Deckert Dick to theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana to fill the vacancy left byRalph Tyson.[1] Obama commented on the two nominations:

I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench. They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court.[4][5]

Dick was ratedSubstantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified by theAmerican Bar Association. Dick's nomination was returned to the president onJanuary 3, 2013. Dick was nominated again by PresidentBarack Obama onJanuary 4, 2013 to theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. Obama commented on this and the other nominations:

Today, I am re-nominating thirty-three highly qualified candidates for the federal bench, including many who could have and should have been confirmed before the Senate adjourned. Several have been awaiting a vote for more than six months, even though they all enjoy bipartisan support.[2][5]

On May 9, 2013, the United StatesSenate confirmed Shelly Deckert Dick to an Article III post for theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana with a voice vote.[6][7] She became chief judge of the court in 2018.[3]
