In 16 states, the office ofsecretary of state is subject toterm limits. Eights states with term limits specify that an officeholder may only serve two consecutive terms. In those states, the two terms are not an absolute limit, and in these cases a former secretary of state may run again after some time out of office, though the amount of time is often unspecified.
