Scott Coogler
L. Scott Coogler was afederal judge on theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush (R). Coogler was the chief judge from 2020 to 2024. He retired from the court on January 2, 2025.[1][2]
Early life and education
A native of Nantucket,Massachusetts, Coogler graduated from the University of Alabama with his bachelor's degree in 1981 and from the University of Alabama School of Law with hisJ.D. in 1984.[1]
Military service
Coogler served as a reservist in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1988 to 1991.[1]

Coogler was nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush (R) on March 27, 2003, to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama vacated byDean Buttram Jr.
TheAmerican Bar Association unanimously rated Cooglerqualified for the nomination.[3]
Hearings on Coogler's nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on May 7, 2003, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen.Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on May 15, 2003. Coogler was confirmed on a voice vote of theU.S. Senate on May 22, 2003, and he received his commission on May 28, 2003.[1][4]
Coogler becamechief judge of the district court in 2020.[1]
Coogler retired on January 2, 2025.[2]
