Special election

A special election forNew York State AssemblyDistrict 136 was called in 2020. The candidate filing deadline was February 24, 2020, and ballots were scheduled to be certified on March 6, 2020.[3]

This election was originally scheduled on April 28, 2020. On March 28, 2020, Gov.Andrew Cuomo (D) postponed New York’s presidential preference primary, one Congressional special election, and four state legislative special elections to June 23, 2020, amid concerns about thecoronavirus pandemic.[4]

On April 24, 2020, Gov. Cuomo canceled the special elections in a proclamation.[5] Because June 23 was also the statewide primary election date, partisan primary elections for New York State Senate District 136 would have also taken place on the same day as the scheduled special election. The seat remained empty until the general election on November 3, 2020.

The seat became vacant afterJamie Romeo (D) was appointed Monroe County Clerk by Gov.Andrew Cuomo on February 6, 2020.[6]

CandidatesJustin Wilcox (D) andSarah Clark (Serve America Movement Party) filed for this race.

I currently work for the U.S. Senate on policy, outreach and constituent services. I have represented the Rochester region, advocating our needs for Senator Gillibrand and previously, Senator Hillary Clinton. In this position I work with countless community groups, organizations, businesses, constituents, and local governments. With almost two decades of experience, I have built an extensive network of connections across our county and throughout the state that I will use to help our community.
Very top of my list is to continue responding to our current health crisis and helping our community recover. Beyond this my top three priorities are education, environment and social justice.

Education is a constitutionally mandated right for the children in our state. And I believe properly investing in each generation of students is the best economic development tool we have. Public education must finally be fully funded and equitable for everyone regardless of zip code.

The environment is our home, we should be aggressive on the policies that protect it- both in energy use, but also how we protect and preserve our beautiful lands and parks. Now is a critical time to enact the recent Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act. There are still rules to draft, studies to finish, hearings to hold and a new agency to be set up, and I look forward to being part of this process for we must invest our public dollars into green jobs and clean energy, we must expedite green shovel-ready projects that will create thousands of jobs and worth of billions of dollars

Finally, social justice encompasses a few key issues. First the belief that food access, affordable and accessible healthcare, and housing are human rights. And second is that we must fight for racial justice by dismantling the historic and systematic barriers that have disproportionately affected communities of color.
There are so many inspirational people out there, and I have been lucky to work for two of mine, Hillary Clinton and Kirsten Gillibrand. But truly I am in awe of all the women out there, especially all these amazing women that are running companies or changing government for the better, their leadership is forever changing the role of women in our society. For me personally though, it has to be my children. They have such a passion for life, for people and for this earth, I feel so lucky to be a part of their journey. And on those crazy days, they definitely help me remember what we are fighting for and what is most important.

Scorecards

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
