Sara Elizabeth Lioi is thechief judge for theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. She joined the Court in 2007 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush.

Lioi is also a judge on theUnited States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief JusticeJohn Roberts on May 19, 2023.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Canton,Ohio, Lioi graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1983 with her bachelor's degree and received a Juris Doctor degree from The Ohio State University Law School in 1987.[2]

Professional career

Lioi was a private practice attorney inCanton, Ohio from 1987 to 1997 before being elected to serve as Judge of theStark County, Ohio Court of Common Pleas from 1997 to 2007.[2]

Judicial career

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (2023-present)

Lioi is a judge on theUnited States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed by Chief JusticeJohn Roberts on May 19, 2023.[1]

Northern District of Ohio

On the recommendation of Senator George Voinovich, Lioi was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio by PresidentGeorge W. Bush onJanuary 9, 2007 to a seat vacated byLesley Wells as Wells assumedsenior status. Lioi was confirmed by the U.S. Senate onMarch 8, 2007 and received commission onMarch 14, 2007.[3]
